We had security cameras around the compound and when I looked to one of the screens, sure enough, Detective John was standing against his car, arms crossed.

I wondered how long he’d stand there but I didn’t want to fuck around. I didn’t need the attention or the heat for the MC right now.

“Stay here,” I ordered. “Watch the cameras. If something happens, come out.”

“Talon,” Buzzy said. “We have to take care of this guy.”

“He’s sniffing,” I said. “Because of those security tapes that are missing. He’s trying to use that to get to me. To get to us. He has nothing and will never have a thing. Play it off and he’ll be gone soon.”

“He’s the reason Hollis is dead,” Layne said, his back to me.

“No,” I said. “The reason Hollis is dead is his own fault. Because of the fucking drugs. Because nobody was paying attention while he was stuffing shit up his nose. Shooting death into his veins. And going into fucking debt.”

I saw Layne make fists.

Come on, Layne. Turn and fucking swing. Get it all out. Settle it like men before the President vote is done.

But Layne didn’t do a thing.

I looked at Everly and gave a nod. She looked pale and scared.

That bothered me because the idea that Detective John could crack Everly’s shell could only mean trouble for the MC. Everly needed to be stronger and ignore the fucking badge and a sense of entitlement.

I left the clubhouse and when Detective John saw me, he took off his sunglasses. He put them on the roof of his car. He reached into the open window and pulled out an envelope.

“What the fuck do you want?” I asked. “This is private property. If you don’t have a warrant, then get out.”

“You know what this is?”

“What?”

“The backup disc,” Detective John said.

It made me want to stop dead in my tracks, but I had to play it off. I had to give the image that I knew nothing about Tommy and his murder.

“Good for you,” I said. “What the fuck does that have to do with me?”

“Everything, Talon. You killed Tommy. It’s right here.”

He shook the envelope. I kept my eyes still, right on Detective John. The truth was that any second I expected two dozen cars to come flying into the lot and then have Detective John would take pride in turning me around and cuffing me. It would haven’t been the first time…

“You saw that?” I asked. “You watched the disc? Because if so, you would have backup right now.”

“Who’s to say they are waiting for my signal?”

“Then give the signal,” I said.

“Not yet.”

“Yeah? Because you’re full of shit.”

“You think that, Talon?”

“I fucking know it.”

“Listen, son…”

That was it for me. I reached for my knife and before Detective John knew what to do, I had him pinned against his car, the blade to his throat. His eyes went wide, his memory best serving him with me as a little punk kid that couldn’t defend himself.

No more, man. No more.
