Chapter Nine

Sadie checked the time on her cell phone after she finished snipping the dead canes on the rosebushes. She’d worked nonstop for almost two hours and there was still no sign of the Hardell men.

Feeling relaxed and invigorated after her therapy session with the rosebushes, she washed up at the kitchen sink, then poured herself a cup of coffee and reheated it in the microwave before heading down the hallway to the office. When she opened the door, she froze, her gaze taking in the stacks of papers and receipts lined up in neat rows across the floor.

She’d spent the past two hours convincing herself that a relationship with Logan would only add stress to her life, and then he’d surprised her by not just making a dent in organizing the paperwork, but completing the entire task. She had no idea how he’d managed to accomplish so much in so little time, but he’d opened her eyes to the possibility that maybe he could be the kind of partner she needed, after all.

She shoved the door closed on that thought and set her coffee on the desk before dropping to her knees to examine the sticky notes Logan had used to label the piles—feed store, household expenses, vet bills, incidentals, truck payment, taxes and bank, which included statements and correspondence.

A shiver of excitement spread through Sadie. She loved crunching numbers. She carried the papers to the desk and settled into the chair, then turned on the calculator. The next time she looked up from her work, Logan stood in the doorway with lunch.

* * *

“HUNGRY?” LOGAN ENTERED the room and set the tray of food on the coffee table before sitting down on the couch.

She glanced at the wall clock. “Two o’clock already?” Sadie moved the calculator aside, stood and stretched.

Logan averted his eyes when the material of her shirt pulled tight over her bosom. After getting no sleep last night and then spending the morning chasing cows, he was loopy enough to do something stupid like pull Sadie into his lap and kiss her.

She sat next to him and helped herself to a sandwich. “Don’t tell the boys I didn’t wash my hands before eating.”

“I won’t.”

“Thanks for making lunch,” she said.

“You’re welcome.” He took a bite, his taste buds barely registering the tangy flavor of the deli mustard.

“No one was home when I arrived. Where did you and your grandfather go off to?”

“I was loading cattle for transport to a feedlot and Gramps had a meeting with the town council.”

“What’s going on with the town?”

“Something to do with replacing a broken water pipe in the basement of the old Woolworth building.” He set aside the sandwich, his appetite dwindling at the prospect of learning the ranch’s fate.

“If you don’t mind,” he said, “I’d like to get this over with.” His comment wiped the smile off her face. “I don’t mean to be rude, Sadie, after all the time you’ve spent—”

“You’ve put in just as many hours as I have.
