Chapter Eleven

Evan

Inside the party, friends and business associates patted my back. I shook hands and laughed at lame ball-and-chain jokes. When I found my grandfather, he gave me a tired smile.

“Time to leave the festivities for the younger generation,” he said, clamping a hand on my shoulder. “Good night, my boy. My car is waiting outside, so I’m going to say a few good-byes and then head out.” His gaze drifted past me, and he stared out the window to the balcony with an amused expression.

When I followed his line of sight, I spotted Charlotte wearing a smug expression, and then Rachel next to her, wearing that magnificent poker face.

“Shit,” I muttered as I moved to hurry to her side.

My grandfather’s cool, bony hand clamped onto my wrist, pinning me next to him. Perhaps he was still as healthy as he claimed—I couldn’t easily shake him off.

“I need to rescue Rachel. Charlotte’s never forgiven me for dumping her in tenth grade. She’s pure poison.”

Magnus grinned. “I agree with you there, but Rachel can handle herself. If she can’t, she’s hardly fit to be married to the likes of you.”

“This isn’t a gauntlet, Grandfather, it’s an engagement party.”

“Same thing. Don’t worry so much. Rachel has the ring, and Charlotte doesn’t.” He released my wrist with a smug look. “Unless I’ve misjudged your little woman, she won’t be intimidated by a viper in designer shoes.”

That was interesting. He had a point. She’d never crumpled when Amber had been a grade-A bitch, which was often. “Now I’m curious. What do you think of Rachel?” I sipped my drink.

“She’s not what I expected.”

That made two of us. “Okay. And?” Through the window, I admired Rachel’s choice of dress for the thousandth time that night. Nothing about her was what I’d expected when I hired her.

“And . . . nothing. I just met the girl.” His voice was as gruff as ever, but something in his eyes twinkled in a way I hadn’t seen in a while. “But maybe unexpected is just what you needed. She’s soft in all the right places, but steel underneath. Go ahead, you can go out there now.”

Rachel was striding this way, and I met her at the door to the balcony.

“Hey, sorry I didn’t rescue you out there. Are you okay?”

“I’m fine.” She didn’t meet my eyes, though. “I’m just going to the restroom. I can manage on my own.”

Fuck. What did Charlotte say to her?

Silently cursing my grandfather for preventing me from checking on her sooner, I released her arm and remained rooted in place, my gaze wandering to the balcony.

Charlotte’s slim figure seemed bony, I thought, unable to resist comparing her boyish lanky form to Rachel’s feminine curves. She glanced over her shoulder at me, her scarlet lips curving upward. Aside from a single hookup about three years ago, I hadn’t been involved with Charlotte since we were teenagers. The malice in her smile suggested that encounter had meant more to her than it did to me. I could hardly remember a single detail about that night.
