CHAPTER FIFTEEN

Three days a week.

Ewan saw Isla at the coffee shop on Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Fridays. He learned that she normally worked remotely but had made an adjustment to her schedule for this gig. He’d taken to changing seats to chat with her about the progress on the website and anything else that came up. It would be rude to do otherwise. Plus he genuinely knew nothing about designing websites, and it was a little fascinating to watch her work. She had endless patience for what were probably very stupid, basic questions, and he appreciated that she didn’t make him feel like an idiot when he asked.

For whatever reason, those three days became his favorites. He liked the freelancer’s company, even when they said nothing and all he heard was the quiet clacking of keys as she worked. And maybe it was because of that. They could sit in the quiet and it still felt like a full conversation. The world was already so loud, and she knew how precious quiet could be.

Today was one of those days. He didn’t have a patient until nine thirty, so he was in no particular rush, and his current read was a damn good one. He sensed more than saw Isla lean over, and she politely hovered her hand near his book to get his attention, as if she were ready to turn the page for him.

“Can I help you?” he asked seriously.

“I finished updating your bio section,” she said. “Can you read over your summary and let me know if you want changes?”

“Sure.” Ewan leaned in as she turned her laptop for him to read the text. The page was in draft mode, or whatever it was called, and he quickly read through the summary she’d written based on the interview they’d done the week before. His brain idly noted that she smelled nice … honey and cinnamon, warm scents that made him think of winter. “This is good. Can I see what the page looks like?”

Isla hit the preview button, and what he saw was a drastic improvement over West End’s previous bare-bones employee page. She’d taken their company colors, black and orange, and used them on the page in a way that wasn’t as in-your-face and distractingly vibrant; less like a tangerine and more like the soft reddish orange of the sandstone formations in Colorado’s Garden of the Gods. She’d paired each physical therapist’s summary of their credentials and specialties with flattering, professional photos and placed individual appointment buttons under each name to encourage patients to schedule with their preferred therapist.

“This is great,” he said, which was kind of an understatement, and he hoped she heard the sincerity in his voice. He started clicking around the pages and found descriptions of different types of physical therapy, information on the services West End offered, and lists of patient resources. “I know you’ve explained what you’re doing, but I still don’t know how you made it look this good. Jeff will love this.
