SAM STARED AT THE REPORT one of the deputies had written about a domestic-violence call the previous night, but he didn’t see a word. He was still kicking himself for kissing Jo. She’d looked lost, alone and deep-down disappointed. He’d wanted to comfort her.

Not that he’d tell her that. She’d probably knock him upside the head if she found a hint of pity in his manner.

But it wasn’t pity, not exactly.

So exactly what was it?

It didn’t matter. Once he’d touched his lips to hers, all thought of comfort fled. He’d felt a jolt of desire that almost overwhelmed him. He couldn’t believe he hadn’t thought of Patty at all for the past several moments. He’d kissed another woman. And liked it.

Jo Hunter, of all women. Nothing like Patty. Maybe not dating since his wife’s death had been a mistake. Especially if he got a hard-on for a hard-nosed cop with an attitude that didn’t quit.

There was nothing in it for him. He was not looking for a relationship. Besides, she lived in L.A.

He picked up the paper, as if changing the angle would help him concentrate. Instead, his thoughts kept returning to the kiss. Throwing the sheet down, he rose, got his hat and headed for the door. A quick walk through town, a cup of coffee at Ruby’s and he’d return to normal.

No more thinking about Jo Hunter.

“When will you be back?” Marjorie asked as he headed out.

“No telling,” he said.

The walk through town in the hot morning sun had an effect, all right. It made him hot and edgy. He spoke when spoken to, but made no effort to charm everyone he encountered.

He went right to the counter and slipped onto a stool.

“Glad you could join me,” Jack said from his right.

Sam looked at his friend. “I didn’t see you.”

“You didn’t see anything. What’s up?”

“Nothing.” He nodded at the waitress and she brought him a cup of coffee.

“Anything to go with that, Sheriff?” she asked.

“Piece of apple pie, if you’ve got it,” he said.

“Coming up. Anything more for you, Jack?” she asked.

“I’m fine.” He waited for her to leave, then looked at Sam.

“Trust my finely honed instincts. Something’s got you tied in a knot. Crime wave in town?”

“Try a frustrating brunette who dresses like biker trash and butts in where she’s not wanted,” Sam replied.

“Aha. So our Miss I’m-an-L.A.-cop has you all wound up. What did she do now—order you-know-who’s arrest?”

“Almost as bad. She interrogated Mrs. Halstead.”

“And that’s bad because…?”

“She can’t tamper with witnesses. She’s the victim in this case, not the investigating officer.”

“What tampering?”

Sam sighed, smiled at the waitress when she delivered his pie and took a big bite. She’d heated it just the way he liked it.

“She didn’t tamper with anything, but it’s the principle. She uncovered something that may or may not tie in.”

“Could she have altered the facts, anyway?” Jack asked.

Sam shook his head. “I’d already found the info. It’s the principle of the thing.”

“Then I don’t see a problem.”

“I kissed her.”

Jack’s mouth fell open.
