Chapter Eleven

Ell sat on her balcony, amazed by just how good the view really was. It wasn’t just the view, either, but the way the place felt private. She didn’t feel like she was on display, like everyone was looking at her.

Instead, the space, which had a swing on it, overlooked a nice outdoor area that all the apartment building shared. There was even a garden in the corner, and the green plants inside said it was well cared for, since the heat of the desert could quickly wither anything left unattended.

A tall, corrugated steel fence surrounded the large back yard, making it feel even more secluded. In fact, Ell thought she might go down later and actually take a look at the garden. It had been a long time since she’d lived anywhere that she could plant things beyond a pot or two.

She glanced behind her, through the large sliding glass door, and spotted the paper on the table. The words were written by Fox, and she had to admit, he wrote the way most people expected doctors to write. Even still, she knew every item listed.

It had felt strange when he’d come by before leaving for work, when he’d brought the notebook and pen, then sat down with her. She’d expected an arrangement like theirs to have her with expectations like cleaning their apartments or owing them one blow job a day.

Which was why it startled her when instead the list had things such as drinking water, eating three healthy meals, icing her ankle every two hours and using a stopwatch Fox had brought to time how long she was upright between resting, along with the upper limit of no more than an hour at a time.

In addition, he’d brought her an eBook reader preloaded with books and access to more if she found nothing that was interesting.

She’d stared at the rules, unable to formulate an exact response to explain how she felt. He’d only offered her a smile that said he understood before telling her that he expected her to write it down in the journal he’d brought and review her feelings later that night when they went over the list.

The fact that he’d taken over so much of her day chafed. Ell had planned her time for as long as she could remember. She’d been on her own and in charge of herself, so having anyone looking over her shoulder made her uneasy.

Yet…there was a security in it also. She spent so long trying to make her life fit a certain mold, so much energy wondering if she was doing things right, that it was oddly soothing to have a list she didn’t have to question. So long as she completed that, she’d done well.

The only point they’d argued on had been a location tracker on her phone. Fox had explained that given the jobs of all three men, they tended to be paranoid. Knowing where she was would help alleviate that from them.

However…Ell just couldn’t seem to get past that one.
