TWELVE

Penny heard the gunshots at the same time Cheetah started barking. Then the night turned chaotic. Zeke hurried into her room, barefooted. He carried his weapon and wore a black T-shirt and jeans. Kevin sat up and started sobbing.

“Get down on the floor,” Zeke said, not waiting for her to reach her child. Instead, he lifted Kevin out of the crib and, crouching, passed the child to Penny. “Stay here and stay down.”

He turned to Cheetah and ordered, “Stay. Guard.”

Cheetah went silent and stood alert in front of Penny and Kevin, his body pointed toward the door.

“I’ll be back as soon as I can,” Zeke said before he hurried through the house. “Nina and Sam are right here.”

Penny held her son and soothed his tears while she tried to stay strong. Cheetah became the consummate professional. The dog seemed to be frozen in stone in front of where she’d pulled Kevin to a dark corner by a chunky nightstand. Cheetah kept his snout in the air and his head toward the open door. Having been protected by the amazing canine before, Penny tried to stay calm.

Glancing around, Penny searched for anything she could use as a weapon. When she saw a set of black bookends enclosing three classic novels, she grabbed one and held it close. The heavy metal shaped like a ladder gave her a sense of confidence but her rapidly beating heart and the cold sweat trickling down her body reinforced her fears for her child.

She’d fight anyone to the death to save Kevin.

Even his own father.

Zeke rushed through the house and out the door, shouting to Nina, “Don’t leave them alone.”

The rookie agent, who’d been sitting with a view of the front yard, had already jumped into action. She had her weapon out and Sam was leashed and roaming around the big den. “I saw at least two out there, Zeke. They split apart. Be careful.”

“Roger,” he called.

Zeke made it out the front door in a low crouch, his bare feet hitting the rocky walkway in a silent thump, cold wind rushing over him. He heard more gunfire, barking dogs and voices echoing out over the yard. When a dark figure whirled toward him and fired, just missing his head, Zeke fired back and the man slumped to the ground.

Then silence.

It was all over in a matter of minutes.

Zeke held his gun on the figure sprawled out on the walkway. Then he leaned down and felt the man’s thick neck for a pulse. He was dead.

Leo Gallagher and his Labrador retriever, True, who’d been patrolling outside, trotted up. “They were trying to get to Kevin. I heard them talking. ‘Kill anyone but the kid,’ one of them said. ‘Keep the kid alive.’”

Zeke stared down at the man on the ground. “This one isn’t going to talk. What about the others? Was one of them Gunther?”

“Hard to say. The one I saw was dressed all in black, including a mask, and he ran down the hill.
