Before I know it, the rest of the day is up and it’s time for me to go. I pack up all my stuff into my bag, not that there’s a lot to take home after my first day.

“I’ll see you Tomorrow,” says Tom.

“Yeah,” I say, opening the door. I stop and turn back to face him, and he looks up from his desk. He looks like an executive, and I have no doubt he’ll end up managing this entire place if that’s what he decides he wants.

“Thank you for today,” I say. And I mean it. I sought this job hating the fact that I had to do it, and now I’ve finished my first day wondering where the time went. And Tom is to thank for that. He might be a little snobby and more than a little serious, but I figure I drive him crazy too so it must even out.

“Of course,” he says. He gives me his full attention when he looks at me, and it’s completely intoxicating. He doesn’t glance away, or look at his watch, or fidget. He just focuses entirely on me, like there’s nothing I could say that he would think was insignificant. I’ve never had someone look at me that way before. I smile at him and shut his office door quietly before taking off down the hallway. This day might have been a good one, but nothing beats my freedom. I can’t wait to go home and go up to my room and grab a book and lie in bed. I make it all the way out to the parking lot and fumble for my keys before realizing the bright lights shining in my face are those of my Jeep.

“Shit,” I mutter as I open the door and stick the key into the ignition. The engine doesn’t even sputter; the battery must be dead. I slam the door and put my hands on my hips. My mom is working and I can’t think of anyone else to come and get me on such short notice. I think of the jumper cables my mom has been nagging me to put in my car for ages. They’re still sitting in the hallway closet as far as I’m aware. Dammit. This is just perfect. I’m digging around for my AAA card and muttering to myself when I hear footsteps and Tom appears beside me.

“What are you still doing here?” he asks.

“My battery is dead,” I answer, throwing my hands into the air irritably. “I was just going to call Triple A. I have jumper cables at my house but no way of getting them.”

“I can take you home so you can grab them,” says Tom. “If that’s alright by you.”

“Thank God. I can’t find the stupid Triple A card anyway.”

Tom chuckles and continues walking to his car. I head to the passenger’s side and start to shift my bag out of the way to open the door when he walks around to my side and does it for me.
