Nothing except the unexpected appearance of my husband. Jasper sauntered into my kitchen the next night. I had just returned from swimming training, so had goggle marks gouged beneath both eyes, flat, damp hair and no make-up. The kitchen was in chaos. I was so focused on trying to help Ruby with her maths homework that the milk was boiling over and the burning chops had set off the smoke alarm.

Jasper surveyed the scene with a judgemental eye before urging the kids to go and wash their hands for dinner. 'I heard about the shoplifting,' he blurted, as soon as we were alone. 'And the impromptu party. Ruby told me. Lucy, I think it's clear that Tally is going off the rails. You must concede that the girls would be better off with me for a while. You obviously need some time to get your act together,' he said with synthetic sympathy.

'Um . . . And what act would that be?' I asked, dashing to and fro turning things off or over, mopping up spillages, sweeping dishes into the sink. 'The third act of the play where I stab my rival to death and throw myself from the parapet?' I tried to fluff the chlorinated tangle of my hair into something which made me look less like a Gestapo wardress.

'You see? Can you hear yourself? Tally told me about the drinking and the sleeping pills. You're obviously self-medicating. And look at the result. Tally's headed for juvenile court and Ruby's turning into a tearaway tomboy. You may be angry with Renée, but you can't deny that she is sophisticated and worldly. She'll be a very good influence on the girls right now. I mean, you obviously need a break.' His voice softened. 'I've been so selfish. Lucy, I'm offering to take the kids off your hands so you can get your life back on track.'

'The only track I know about is the one I'm tied to. You have no idea how tempting it is to tell our families and friends back home what an asshole you've been, and shame you into giving me more money. But it's too humiliating to tell anyone. I mean, who would believe it?'

'Look, Lucy. I know it's been hard for you, but money is tight right now . . . Haven't you been reading the papers? There's a recession. The stockmarket's in free fall.'

'So, I'll just sell the children into slavery, shall I?'

'I'm just waiting for some investments to mature. I've told you.'

'You maturing would be a bloody start. I mean, what do you see in that maniac? She's over-dressed and undereducated. She's . . .'

Jasper bridled. 'Renée is a self-assured, independent, career woman . . .'

'Who has independently squandered our life-savings. Why give our hard-earned money to Renée when you could just flush it down the loo?'

'I did not come here to listen to you vilifying my girlfriend. I came to take the kids to town for the weekend. So that you can think about your future.
