Jillian rushed down the street toward the parking garage. How could Alan be so insensitive? Why had he not said anything about knowing Reagan before they went backstage? This was a new side of Alan, and she was sure she didn’t like it. What should she do now? She had glanced over her shoulder twice since leaving the concert hall, but he had not followed her out of the building. She stopped short as she realized this was the woman Jenny had once mentioned. A pianist to whom Alan had given his heart, only to have it shattered. But not just any pianist, it had been Reagan Whitmore! The realization she had met a woman from Alan’s past in the flesh made Jillian’s heart race. She was flooded with insecurity at the possibility of Alan rejecting her after seeing and holding his past love.

Arriving at her parked car, she fumbled with the key then managed to unlock the door. She slid into the driver’s seat, shaking as a jumble of emotions attacked her. Nausea bubbled up from her stomach into her throat. The desire to vent her frustration and hurt consumed her. She pulled out her cell phone, scrolled down her contact list, and touched the screen. She licked her dry lips and waited.

“Hi. I know it’s late, but would you mind if I came over?” A tear rolled down her right cheek. “Thanks, I’ll see you soon.” Jillian turned the key in the ignition and started the engine. She pulled out of the parking garage and drove with the radio on to distract her from thinking. It was a short drive to her destination. She parked beside the curb. She could feel her legs shake as she made her way to the house. The door opened before she could press the doorbell. Jillian hesitated before stepping over the threshold into the foyer. Should she bother Audrey with her problems?

“Thanks for seeing me. Something happened tonight that upset me, and I need to talk to someone. But if it’s too late or you don’t want to listen, I’ll understand.”

Audrey put her arm around Jillian and gave her shoulder a squeeze. “Of course I’ll listen. I put some water on for tea after you called. It should be ready.” She guided Jillian to the kitchen.

Her eyes widened. “Oh my,” was all Jillian could say as her eyes moved around the spacious, gourmet kitchen. A centralized island dominated the room. Taking in the space, she noted a freestanding workstation with a butcher-block surface that included a utility sink with a long neck faucet. Off to one side was a walk-in pantry. The appliances were all high-end.

“You must like to cook.”

A smile brightened Audrey’s face. “The kitchen came with the house, but before my husband, Benjamin, died, I did enjoy cooking.” Her smile faded, and she stared into the air. “It’s no fun to cook for one.”

“I know how you feel, but what a waste of such a wonderful kitchen.” She ran her hand over the granite top of the island.
