I SAT AT THE TABLE, watching the two gods converse. It was a first for me.
Fin was constantly glancing from them to me. âDid I miss something?â he whispered.
I shook my head. âNo.â
âWhy arenât youââhe nodded toward Notusââyou know? Destruction, death.â The firebird twirled his hand in the air.
âYouâre looking a little pale, Fin,â I announced. âI think you need to go to bed.â
He glared at me with a scowl. âIâm fine.â
âFin,â said Zoran firmly. âTo bed.â
I smirked. For how much the pair fought, Zoranâs overprotective nature sure did come in handy.
âIâm fine,â the firebird exclaimed. âReally, I am.â
âNow.â
Fin groaned. âIâve slept all day.â
âYour core is still weak. To bed, now.â
He didnât move and folded his arms. Vines shot up from the ground and wrapped around him. They lifted Fin into the air.
âZoran!â He thrashed his legs.
âDo as youâre told the first time.â He turned to Notus. âShifters. The source of all problems.â
Notusâs eyes landed on me. âAgreed.â
The firebird was dropped on the bed. The vines stripped off his clothes and tucked the covers around him. I smiled as I saw the smoke billowing up from the lump. I had to try not to laugh. Even Notus was watching with a look of curiosity. It must be rare for him to be around such a temperamental creature.
The fire started to grow higher from the bed until a fireball shot toward the god. Zoran went to shove Notus out of the way, but his hand went right through the wind god as did the fireball. Notus reformed and appeared unphased.
I laid my head on the table. I wanted to know how to do that. Having spent my whole life looking down on him, I now admired the man and was slightly jealous of him. All I wanted to do was learn how to do Notusâs tricks.
âI told you yesterday, no fire!â Zoran marched to the bed. âYouâre unstable. You canât afford to be blasting out fireballs.â
Fin wasnât cooperating and when I saw ice shoot into Zoranâs face, I knew it was time to leave before the whole room went up in flames. I hurried outside, already feeling the heat on my back. Notus joined me and sat on the railing.
Resting my arms on it, I peered out over the garden. âWhen will the flowers be ready? I didnât think it would take this long.â
âThey havenât been getting the heat they need, but theyâre close.â
âThen, youâll leave?â
Notus grew still and sat there with hooded eyes.
âI donât think I can learn everything in a few days.â
âIâm needed elsewhere, Jerric. As much as the other wind gods mock my work, if I didnât do it, the earth element would declare war on us.â
Nodding, I let out a sigh.
âAre you planning on fighting me once the flowers are pollinated?â
I shook my head. âI learned from Fin Iâm not capable of killing someone. I felt guilty enough for putting out his core.â I glanced over my shoulder to see fire coating the curtains. âAnd that little mistake is still causing problems.
