Chapter Fourteen

Let Me Have My Moment

Colt had gotten stuck working late every single day since his day off after Halloween and by the time he got home he was so wiped that Rhett hadn’t gone over, giving him time and space to relax and get some much needed sleep. They’d texted continuously in the absence of real contact, but Rhett was missing the spark that being around Colt lit in his bones.

The Saturday morning after he wrote a huge anatomy midterm, he stood in front of the mirror after his shower, examining his body. He could tell he’d gained weight while he was with Colt, and it didn’t look good on him. After the toast there had been a handful of popcorn, with nachos for a midafternoon snack. They hadn’t eaten any real meals, instead grazing like cattle on whatever snacks Colt had in his house. Once he’d gotten home late that night, he had purged whatever was left in his system, reminding himself he needed to be careful. The next morning, he had slid right into his old, carefully calculated eating routine. Tapping his bones as he counted, he swore they were more prominent under his skin than the first time he’d counted when he got home and it felt like success. The fat around his midsection still persisted, though, regardless of what he did to get rid of it.

Irritating.

He wrapped his bathrobe around his body and headed for his bedroom to get into some comfortable clothes. Dylan had gone out to Eden last night and had texted that he was going home with a “friend.” Rhett had snickered at that and responded promptly with an admonishment to be safe, as he always did even though it made him feel like he was Dylan’s father.

He threw on a pair of comfy sweatpants and a baggy T-shirt before heading to the living room. With his tests over, his pieces for the student gala completed and his essays handed in, he had nothing to work toward for the time being and was happy to have a break. The plan for the day was simply to watch horror movies and wait for Colt to be off shift so he could finally see the man he was in love with.

Love. His heart thrilled at the thought of being loved and loving in return.

Clicking on the TV, he turned off the music and started watching Slasher on Netflix. He’d finished The Haunting of Hill House yesterday after restarting it because he couldn’t remember a single thing he’d watched when he was drunk. As the credits rolled on the first episode, his phone buzzed beside him, rattling on the coffee table.

“Hello?” he said, picking up the unknown call.

“Babe,” Colt sighed. “God, I needed to hear your voice.”

“Where are you calling from?”

“My work cell. Forgot mine at home this morning.” Colt yawned. “What are you up to?”

“Watching a show on Netflix. Aren’t you at work?”

“I’m off. They’ve sent me on a bit of a leave. I need to see you.
