Chapter Seventeen
I called Eastie Timesâs main number and left a message. I said Iâd found what Mr. Elliot indicated might be there, and I wanted to talk to him.
I made the call with Flannagan and half a dozen techs surrounding me, ready to trace any return call. But seconds became minutes, and soon minutes had turned into a quarter of an hour, and then half.
âMaybe all the calls from cops have spooked him,â I said.
âOr maybe heâs the Southside Stalker, and he did what he wanted to do: get you into the lower level.â
We waited for an hour, but eventually Flannagan called it quits. âIf he calls you, you contact us immediately, you understand? We canât find anything to tie this guy to a physical address. Everything is fake.
âHis domainâs registered under a false name. The siteâs set up through a maze of proxies and VPNâs that has our tech team baffled. The phoneâs a burner. This guy is either the killer, or the most paranoid nutjob this side of the Mason Dixon line.â
âHeâs definitely paranoid,â Natalie put in. We all turned her way, and she shrugged. âI mean, assuming all the personas on the website are the same guy, thereâs some really paranoid, weird, conspiracy stuff there.â
âThere is?â I asked. In all the commotion, I hadnât found time to look at the rest of the site.
Flannagan nodded. âHeâs really concerned about incoming shipments. Heâs got a theory that Chinaâs smuggling Mercury into the bay in cargo containers, and dropping it in the water.â
I stared at him. âWhy?â
âSo it will get in the drinking water.â
âButâ¦why?â I asked again.
âTo cause fertility problems, and create a small, intellectually stunted population.â
âOkayâ¦but why?â
He scoffed. âSo they can beat us in the space race. So they can colonize Mars while weâre banging rocks together. Obviously.â
I laughed, and Nat said, âHeâs got other theories too.â
âSome of the old classics,â Flannagan put in. âYou know, the government spying on us with satellites. Fluoride in toothpaste.â
âAnd some weird ones that seem to be all his.â
âLike what?â
âLike, Norway is a sleeper cell nation, working for communist Russia.â
âWhy Norway?â
Flannagan groaned. âIf youâre interested, heâs got plenty of articles about it. But I need to get going. Thanks to you, Iâve got another serial killer to find.â
He sent the tech team on their way, leaving me a second phone â a direct line to the techies, to notify them if I got a call.
âThereâs a uniform outside in his car,â Flannagan said. âNameâs Shield. Definitely give him shit for it. Everyone does, and he loves it.
âHeâll be in to do perimeter checks on the hour every hour. Someone else will be here at six to take his place. Either Williams or Becker. If youâre going somewhere, you tell them. If youâre expecting someone, you tell them. Understand?â
âYeah, yeah.â
âTrust me, weâre not doing this out of the goodness of our hearts, Wallace. But if you wind up dead, well, that Valentine femaleâll turn you into the next Joan of Arc. And Iâll beâ¦well, whoever cut her head off.
