Things have gone back to normal once she got back on her medication. No more wild child moments. No more tantrums. No tearful breakdowns.

Just her.

And me.

In motherfucking bliss.

But I have to know how my daughter is doing. I need to check on her. To give her some sort of explanation and a promise that I will come back for her. She’s probably beside herself with stress and worry. Brie’s an innocent. Such a sweet, brilliant girl. As much as I belong out here with my Hannah, I can’t help but feel torn. Her little heart will be broken.

“We almost there?” Hannah questions from the passenger seat, twisting her peace sign necklace between her fingers. “I’m hungry.”

I learned my lesson last time and no longer leave her at home alone when I go places. She rides shotgun and tells me a million different stories about her childhood—the ones I wasn’t privy to being behind the glass and in the shadows of her life.

“Another fifteen minutes and we’ll be on the outskirts of Tucson. We’ll find a diner or something once we get there.”

She nods and sticks one of her feet out the open window, wiggling her bare toes in the wind. Her dress lifts up and shows her pale pink panties which makes driving fucking impossible when I want to pull over and fuck her with my fingers instead. The girl likes to fuck. A lot. She’s giving this old man a run for his money.

Dragging my gaze from between her thighs, I wonder if I’ll be able to buy some gym equipment for this house. I’d not considered it when I had it furnished but after a week of not working out, it’s driving me crazy. Running through the desert and swimming laps in the pool simply aren’t cutting it. My body is used to a more rigorous regime.

“Do you think they’re worried about me?” she questions, her head rocking to the beat of the music.

I think about how Baylee has hovered over her children over the years as if they may vanish at any moment. How War is always glancing at exits and people as if everyone is a potential child kidnapper. They’re obsessed with their children’s safety. And even though their oldest daughter is eighteen, I can imagine they’re stressing the fuck out.

“Do you want to call them?” I blurt the words out before I can stop myself.

She bites on her lips and shrugs her shoulders. “Maybe. Can I think about it?”

Smiling, I reach over and grab her hand. “You can do whatever you want, sweet girl. I’m going to check on Brie so I don’t care if you check in, as long as you don’t tell them where you’re at or that you’re with me.”

She jerks her hand away and glares at me. “Why are you going to call her?”

Passing a slow car, I gun it before answering her. “She’s my daughter. I need to let her know I’m okay and I love her.”

Her mood darkens, and she crosses her arms over her chest.
