“Why do blessings always come in disguise?”
I had cheekily flipped Orlando the bird as he spotted me from Brooklyn Heights. Now, I was just waiting for him to come home so we could have dinner. The days were growing longer and longer, and as the new club was due to open, we had less time to relax.
Once The Kingmaker was out of the way, that would be a blessing in disguise, because even if he wanted to build it up again, it would take him years.
The hundreds of teams that he had dotted around the globe would be carrying on with their normal lives, apart from the ones who had a room like Joseph; they would be left scratching their heads as why no instructions were coming through. Maybe they had a lucky break… if they realized it, they had the chance of a normal life.
An ordinary life, how I longed for that. It had been too long since I had just kicked back and relaxed. The club I could handle, I love that vibe and atmosphere, it gave me a real buzz, but the spy stuff, was hard.
I hear the whoosh as the door to the apartment opens. Like the silent whoosh you hear in sci-fi films.
“Spy Number One is back home and in the house,” Orlando calls from the hallway.
I call back. “I’m just making dinner, in the kitchen diner when you have cleaned up.”
“I will be just a few minutes, then I’ll be with you,” he yells back as he runs up the small flight of stairs.
I hear the door open to the bedroom. That does have a slight horror movie creak, but nothing a dab of oil won’t sort out.
The smell from the oven starts to fill the kitchen, it was good timing for Orlando, much longer and we would have been eating something crispy that should not have been crispy.
I hear him plod back down the stairs and the sound of bare feet crossing the wooden floor.
“Smells good, what it is?” he asks.
“My specialty, frozen pizza.”
“It may have been frozen, but it smells good, especially after standing on the top of God-only-knows how many skyscrapers,” Orlando replies.
I feel his hands wrap around my waist as I start to slice the pizza. He brushes my hair from my neck, and I feel his hot breath.
“I think we may have a chance with The Kingmaker, there is a clear line of sight right into the middle of Brooklyn Heights,” he says.
“Let’s just hope Bob can get a location on him,” I reply.
“Fingers crossed,” Orlando says, as he carries the pizza to the table.
“So how clear could you see me?” I ask.
“Clear enough, I could see the grin on your face as you flipped me the bird,” he replies.
“That is good enough, I guess the rifle has a stronger scope as well?”
“Yeah, it is a bit more powerful than my spotting scope,” he says.
We sit at the table and enjoy our homemade, frozen pizza. Not the healthiest of choices, but we can be excused.
