Dante and Alejandro had explained the day’s events to me and sent me up to speak to Serena, worried about how she had closed down since coming home from the hospital.

I wasn’t sure how to feel about their faith in me to get her to talk, but when Dante had gripped my by the shoulders and told me to help make our girl feel better, a determination had swirled inside me that spurred me on.

I had heard her conversation with her Pa, a part of me felt guilty standing outside her room and listening to their private conversation. but now I understood where her mind was.

“Can I come in?” I asked as she looked over at me, nodding as she wiped away a tear. My heart ached as I looked at her, nerves making me hesitate as I sat on the end of her bed.

“Are you okay?” I asked, kicking myself for the stupid question. Friend me would have scooped her up and hugged her tightly, but since we had decided to be intimate, I was on new grounds with her and didn’t want to overstep the boundaries.

“Yeah. I think I’m just contemplating life and a little hormonal after seeing Elsie with the guys and her daughter. Silly women’s hormones and all.” She smiled at me but the smile didn’t reach her eyes.

“Serena, it’s me. You can talk to me. You don’t have to put the wall up anymore.” I had heard her confession of love for me and I wanted to say I loved her too, but didn’t want to push her. She sighed, sitting up on the bed and started dusting off invisible lint from the blanket.

“I guess I’m just having one of those moments of biological clock realities and trying to figure out what happens next.” I nodded and watched as she shuddered a breath, clearly holding back a sob.

“I love Elsie like a sister, but I’m also jealous of her. She has everything she ever wanted, and she deserves it all ten times over, but holding Aisling in my arms had reality hitting home for me. What if I never have what she does?” She turned to look at me and the sheer desperation in her eyes spurred me on as I gathered her into my arms, holding her against my chest as she cried.

Serena was always so stubborn, so strong willed and confident in life. Watching her fall apart like this was ripping my heart out of my chest.

“Sweetheart. You can and will have it all. I promise you. You deserve the world Serena, and I will make it my mission to give it to you.” She sniffed against my chest, her arms wrapping around me like an octopus and squeezing tightly.

I rocked her, holding her to my chest and let her cry it out until she looked up at me, her eyes red and swollen and mascara tracks running down her cheeks.

She looked into my eyes and in that moment, something shifted. The way she stared at me, into me, I realized I understood what her father had said about seeing an angel.
