CHAPTER SIXTEEN

Henry and I packed the essentials, lugging heavy bags up to the attic and my gateway through the party wall. There were voices next door as some of Mrs. Beecham’s boarders chatted on the edge of hearing. They were going to have a hell of a story when Jane, Henry, and Samuels went through, carrying an invisible patient.

Samuels was taking the idea of an invisible man in stride, leaving me to wonder about the objects he’d been importing and the nature of his buyers. If we all got out of this in one piece, I’d have some questions for him.

But it would have to wait. While they went through the wall, I, on the other hand, intended to go out the front door, so I was travelling light. If things went well, I’d meet them at the Mindles’, but if they didn’t, Henry was to keep his head down. When the time was right, he was to go see Pestle.

Whether he’d stick to the plan, I didn’t know. Henry came from a prominent family, but I still didn’t know how much trouble we were in. Pestle may have been bluffing when he said they’d taken whatever he had on Henry. What better way to ensure that I’d follow through on the task? I couldn’t exactly say no. Henry wanted to be a doctor, and being under the thumb of either Pestle or the government put that at risk. If I could free him from the blackmail, I would.

“So, we can walk through the wall?” Samuels asked, his eyes wide. He was sitting on a dusty trunk, three bags at his feet. For the moment at least, I’d shaken Jane off, annoyed at her repeated attempts to talk when I barely had time to think.

“Technically, the wall won’t be there,” I replied. “But you’ll need to be fast. The spell won’t last long, particularly since it’s already been used once. You don’t want to be caught partway.”

He blanched. “And where did you learn this?”

I listened for Henry. He and Jane had gone for Suarez. My stomach was doing somersaults.

“We’ve been collecting knowledge,” I said dismissively.

“That’s a valuable trick,” he said. “If you’d be willing to teach it, I could secure you a great deal of money.”

“It’s not for sale.”

He opened his mouth, searching for words. “But you’ll let them take you, use you for their purposes?”

I was sorting through a bag of components, things I might need if I was never to come back to the house that Henry could set aside for me. Once I was out, in however many days, weeks or years, I could build a new supply, but it would take a while, particularly with Penny gone. I might even have to work in secrecy.

Or I might never get out, an idea that has special meaning for an immortal. The idea of living forever had grown more comfortably over time, but now it seemed so ludicrous. It seemed so strange to worry about living forever when people were struck down by cars on a daily basis.
