Chapter 9 - Stefano the outlaw

“The road to hell was easy because one always goes downward with one's eyes tight shut.”

Niccolò Macchiavelli

The economic crisis, in Italy, arrives like the hot air in the summer, it drains the water reserves with which the fields are cultivated, it dries up the terrain, it is incessant, day and night, it does not let up.

You know it will end eventually, sooner or later, but every morning the muggy weather is out there and you have to get up from the bedsheets wet with sweat, get dressed and move on. The heat wave lasts a long time in our country, it is suffocating.

The weakest (the businesses which are just getting started and those which are older, unable to change rapidly) fall victim, we no longer even count the companies which close down, the entrepreneurs who take their life.

It is not possible to give, superficially, a political judgement or to express an accusation that enough was not done to face one of the most serious events of the economic history of the world.

It is not even possible to accuse those who have risked taking steps against the system, in the risk of going against the law, but in the best interest of their own business.

Stefano and Dimitri with bitterness tell me of the solution that they came up with in order to not close Wildix down. “It must not be the model to follow” Stefano says. “This type of thing should not even be thought of by an entrepreneur. But I was desperate and saw it as the only thing possible, at the time”.

They had not been paying VAT for a few months... They would have had the money to pay the suppliers, employees, and the research which had arrived to such a significant point that it would have been a crime to force it to a stop.
