I beat the sun and wait for it to rise before I wake Cassie.

She stirs, curling her lithe body inward and then stretching, arms above her head in a huge jaw-cracking yawn. “Hey there.”

“Hey yourself.” I brush a kiss across her lips.

She smiles and her golden-brown skin flushes.

“Good sleep?” I brush a lock of windswept hair off her forehead.

“So good. Did you sleep at all?” She blinks up at me with the most adorably innocent expression that makes me want to tuck her back into me and never let her leave my side.

She slept like the dead and I envy her for it.

Years of being mission ready have made deep sleep a long-lost memory. The only way I sleep well is in a room with a door that can’t be unlocked from the outside and with a weapon in arms reach.

And as much as I wanted to lie down next to her and sleep, it’s one of the most hardwired instincts I have. Another body in my bed puts me on edge.

I kiss the top of her head. “Let’s go. You have a flight to catch this afternoon and I left my house unlocked.”

She springs up. “Oh my gosh, yes. Let me use the bathroom and we can head back.”
