FAMOUS FEUDS

1. Buddy Ryan. Ryan and Ditka worked together in Chicago when Ryan served as the Bears’ defensive coordinator, and the two always maintained a tenuous relationship in Chicago. But after Ryan left to become head coach of the Eagles, the gloves came off, and the two spent the next few seasons sniping at each other.

2. Buddy Ryan. Another coach who didn’t get along with the feisty Ryan, as the two once came to blows on the sideline while serving as assistant coaches with the Oilers.

3. Buddy Ryan. When the two were coaching against each other in the NFC East in the 1990s, there was certainly no love lost, especially after Johnson accused Ryan’s Eagles of targeting his kicker.

4. Eric Mangini. The Patriots coach has rankled many across the league with his success over multiple decades, but his former defensive coordinator likely got under his skin when he took the Jets head coaching job in 2006.

5. Pete Carroll. Harbaugh, the former coach of the Niners, rubbed Carroll the wrong way in the halcyon days of the Seattle-San Francisco rivalry. But it was a feud that had its roots in college when Harbaugh was the head coach at Stanford and Carroll was at USC and Harbaugh was perceived to have run up the score on the Trojans in a 2009 game. During the postgame handshake, Carroll could be heard exclaiming “What’s your deal?” to Harbaugh, and a rivalry was born.

6. Tom Landry. This one proves the NFC East battles have always been spicy. Allen’s Redskins and Landry’s Cowboys embraced the hate in the 1970s. The fiery, passionate Allen was a terrific counterpoint to the cool and reserved Landry.

7. Todd Haley. The two were AFC rivals in November 2010 when McDaniels’s Broncos crushed Haley and the Chiefs, 49–29. After the game when the two went in for the traditional postgame handshake, Haley refused, pointed a finger at McDaniels, and said, “There’s a lot of [expletive] being talked about you.” Haley would later apologize for the incident.

8. Mike Ditka. The Bears and Packers have always been rivals, but a 1986 game set the stage for a feud between the coaches. At the end of a play, Green Bay’s Charles Martin picked up Chicago quarterback Jim McMahon and drove his shoulder into the turf, leading to an injury, and—in all likelihood—a chance for the Bears to repeat as champions. The two coaches were at odds for the rest of their careers.

9. Mike Ditka. This rivalry was weight-based. The two coaches clashed in 1984 when Walsh unveiled his “Angus’’ backfield near the goal line against Chicago, featuring 260-pound guard Guy McIntyre as a blocking back. San Francisco won, 23–0, and after the game, the 49ers taunted the Bears, telling them to “bring your offense’’ next time. The following year, Chicago beat San Francisco, 26–10, and Ditka unveiled his “Refrigerator’’ backfield, letting 310-pound William Perry run the ball as the Bears ran out the clock.

10. Dan Reeves. While Shanahan had his share of feuds with others,
