Alexa was coming back to Irving today.

She hadn’t replied to most of the texts that I had sent while she was away, but she did answer my call on Christmas and on New Year and informed me about her flight back home. We mostly talked about work and I also told her about the details of Eleanor and Leo’s wedding, and that I had already paid for her bridesmaid dress. She told me she’d pay me back but I told her that it wasn’t needed, that she was in this mess because of me and it was the least I could do.

But there was something off about Alexa on the phone.

She had told me that she had wanted to spend her time off of work, catching up with her family. I understood that. Alexa had spent months working away in the department, and had even agreed to help in the morgue when she was asked to by Dr. Webber, as long as she was compensated. She would’ve been burned out and needed to recharge at home.

But she could have taken the time to send at least one reply, right?

Maybe she wasn’t tired. Maybe she was bothered by how you just left her apartment after having sex with her, Everett.

My eyes fluttered close in annoyance. I had meant to talk to her about it the following morning but the research institute had kept calling me nonstop. So whatever discussion that Alexa and I needed to have had to be put on hold until I finished my work. But the work extended for almost two days and by the time I got back to the department, Alexa had already left on her break. I wasn’t able to get a hold of her till the phone call that we had over Christmas and New Year.

As much as what had happened that night was mutual, I couldn’t help but want to apologize for leaving her first thing in the morning.

“You look like the coffee is giving you constipation,” Julian said, sauntering into the kitchen, clad in a white towel. His hair was still wet from the shower and his upper body still glimmered with droplets of water, as if he hadn’t bothered to dry himself before heading down. “Want waffles?”

As much as I wanted to scold him, the fact that he was making me breakfast stopped me from doing so. It was a silent agreement between Julian and me. As long as he fed me, I wouldn’t get in his way. The fact that he was making waffles meant that there must be a girl in his room from last night. Julian had his own share of one-night stands, but there were times when he thought that the girl was exceptionally good, so much so that she deserved breakfast in bed. And then he’d ghost her right after.

“So why were you so glum over the holidays? Is it because your girlfriend wasn’t here to give you a Christmas blowjob and a New Year fuck?”

My eyes narrowed and I gripped the handle of my mug a little tighter in annoyance.
