Tel did not rush to return to their little camp. He remained under the tree for hours, even dozing for a while. The sleep was deep and dreamless. He had started with his black hair resting on the bark of the trunk but woke up curled on the ground between the pair of exposed roots. It was still light when the smell of the fire reached him.

A dull fist of dread sat under his ribs. He tried to ignore it, stood, and brushed the dust and debris from the black hairs on his body. The birds had begun busying themselves with their evening feeding. He chased thoughts of his own hunger from his mind.

When he reached the tree on which his clothes hung, he stopped to pull his trousers on. Turo did not seem to notice him at the edge of camp. Propped against packs and blankets near the fire, he lounged. Tel’s breath stopped in his throat. The rays of the low sun, filtered through swaying leaves and branches, set light and shadow to dancing across his form. The sapphire hair blinded where touched by the sunlight, like the Sea of Queens under a cloudless afternoon sky. His nose might have seemed too large on a man with a less sturdy jaw. Broad but still long, his neck led to a pretty cup of smooth skin between two massive collar bones. After them came the meaty shelf of his chest. Below this stretched his trunk, a column of ruts and plateaus of muscle disappearing into his leggings.

Turo whistled a slow melody. He held an oak leaf by the petiole and turned it in space before his eyes, spellbound. Tel’s gaze fell to his big arm, where ropy flesh shifted under unmarred skin. As hypnotized as Turo, he felt his cock hardening again.

When he could manage it, Tel cleared his throat. “You’re enjoying yourself.”

“Yes.” Turo lifted an easy smile to the king. “And you?”

“Me?” He began crossing the distance between them.

“Did you enjoy your time of reflection?”

“I…” Fire galloped across his cheeks. “Yes.”

“Good.”

“I’m concerned I’ll be recognized.”

Turo tightened his abdomen to come to a sitting position. He reached behind his back and tossed Tel a pack so he could sit comfortably. “Do you think you are Feigh’s lone handsome man? So handsome is the king, he’ll be known at first glance by a stranger?”

“I don’t think I’m handsome.”

Turo shot Tel a look that was more sword than dagger.

“I don’t think I’m that handsome. Many thousands—tens of thousands—of women and men fought alongside me. It will take but one knowing me.”

“What would the harm in that be?”

Tel settled himself on the pack. He noticed a bit of his dried seed on his chest and tried to disguise rubbing it off as tending to an itch. “I’m aiming to surprise this stagsblood king. Jeth. My son.” He sighed. “I keep forgetting. We need to move with as little fuss as possible. If we attract attention, the attention may attract more attention. Jeth’s attention.
