Chapter Thirty-Nine - Shopping

Amanda led a short jump to the centre of Freetown. Princess was starting to recognise the layout and could see that this shop was down a side street not far from Mike’s hotel.

The shop looked like something from an old western movie.

They went inside and the inside was like something from an old western movie! Amanda was greeted by the owner like an old friend.

‘Amanda, how wonderful to see you again. You are well I trust?’ The owner extended his hand and Amanda shook it with fondness.

‘Thank you, yes. Princess ...’ - Amanda turned to indicate Princess - ‘this is James. James - Princess.’

‘It is my pleasure, Princess. What is it our honour to assist the pair of you with today?’

‘We are going on a dangerous trek and Princess here needs weapons.’

Amanda selected some weapons for Princess to try out. While James was getting something from out the back Amanda explained that the size of the weapons wasn’t really linked to the amount of the damage they inflicted. It was the style that was important.

There were two types of weapons - range weapons, such as guns, bow and arrow etc. and close weapons - knives, swords, spears etc.

Princess settled on a pair of Walther LP53s in cobalt blue. Old automatic pistols from the early part of the twentieth century. The LP53s had an elegantly long barrel, just felt ‘right’ and could be carried without distracting too much from the fabulous outfit Princess wore. For close combat Princess selected a khukuri knife. This was a vicious looking blade about 30 cm long with a right-angle curve in the middle. Princess thought it looked terribly exotic.

‘These look and feel great,’ said Princess to Amanda, ‘but how do I ... I’ve never fired a gun before.’

Amanda turned to James.

‘May we use your range, James?’

‘But of course.’

The world disappeared and was replaced by a western movie style gun range, with wooden targets of varying sizes in the distance.

Princess raised one of the pistols and smiled. As she raised it a gunsight appeared in the distance. This was the same as Doom 4400 - a popular Pachinko shooting game. Of course, it was - she was, after all, in Pachinko.

Within seconds all the targets had been flattened and there was a satisfying smell of gunpowder in the air.

Princess heard Amanda’s voice, apparently speaking to James.

‘Can we have something a little more engaging. Perhaps the 2079 Robot Revolution?’

The world disappeared again and Princess found herself in an old-style car factory from the mid-twenty-first century. From the far end of the factory robots came streaming toward her with clear intent.

Princess fired back with both pistols. There were hundreds of robots streaming towards her and it was impossible to get them all. Princess backed up between some machinery to create a choke point and then realised there was a second entrance to her position. The robots kept falling but more would take their place.

The situation felt completely real and Princess forgot that this was a simulation.
