CHAPTER 27

When I opened my eyes, I was looking up at a white ceiling. For a moment nothing registered. My mind refused to work. Then it all came rushing back to me. I gasped and sat up.

“Tania. How are you?” Dan sat down next to me on a chair by the bed and took my hand.

I looked around frantically. “Where am I? Where’s Dad? Where’s Peter?”

Dan brushed the hair from my forehead. “You collapsed after helping your father.”

“Why didn’t you let me finish?” I pulled the covers away and began to swing my legs over the side. Then I noticed that I had nothing on but a hospital gown. Mortified, I yanked the blankets back over me and blushed. “Where are my clothes?” I glared at him. “And where’s Peter?”

He held up his hands, his face serious, but his eyes twinkled. “Hey, now. Easy. One question at a time. First, you have to hide what you can do. It would have looked really strange if your dad had arrived at the hospital completely healed. Second, you can’t give out all your life force at one time like that. If I hadn’t pulled you away, you could have died.”

“But Dad…”

“You saved his life. Now, your clothes are in the drawer over there.”

Before I could respond, a doctor came in the room. Dan stood up and went to the window, looking out at the blue sky and puffy white clouds above the palm trees.

“I’m glad to see you’re awake,” said Dr. Wilkins. “How are you feeling?”

I frowned at the doctor. “I’m fine. Why am I in here? It’s my dad who was burned in the fire, not me.”

Dr. Wilkins made soothing noises as he checked my eyes and listened to my lungs. “Now, now, calm down. From what your fiancé here told me, you two were running through a smoke filled building warning people to get out. That was very foolish of you, albeit very heroic. You must have had some smoke inhalation, because you passed out in the ambulance.”

Fiancé? I glared at Dan’s back.

The doctor continued to check my vitals. “We wanted to keep you overnight for observation. You were in shock when you came in. How do you feel now?”

“I'm fine. How is my dad?”

“Your father is in intensive care with second and third degree burns, but he's going to make it.”

I gasped and sank back against the pillow. Fear gnawed at my stomach.

The doctor patted my hand. “Don’t worry. We have an excellent burn unit and experienced surgeons who have done many skin grafts. He’s in good hands. You’re free to leave as soon as the nurse comes around to discharge you. You should take it easy for a couple of days and drink plenty of water. You’ve had quite a jolt to your system. Oh, and there are two police officers waiting to ask you some questions. I'll send them in.” The doctor left the room.

I stared at the door, numb with fear as I tried to process everything he’d told me.
