I text Tess in the morning when I wake up. I'm sick to my stomach––a combination of malnourishment and not having a safe haven in what has now become the devil's lair.

Me: I fucking hate kids.

Tess: Tell me something I don't know.

I finally explain to her what happened with the gummies and her conversation I overheard.

Tess: Holy shit. What are you going to do? You have to tell Nelson, Hail. He needs to be able to discipline her. He's her dad, even if it's only been a few months.

Me: No! I can't tell him. At least, not until I talk to her first. I need to figure out why she did that. That's some next level crazy shit.

Tess: I mean … she probably hates you. Don't most teenagers hate the people their parents are dating?

Me: That's what I was thinking, but Nelson and I aren't even dating!

Tess: Um, okay, but I'm sure she can see he's still into you. She's still getting to know him, and here comes some woman from his past that is closer to him than she is. It makes sense she'd want to keep you apart, even if it's batshit.

Me: Maybe. Regardless, I'm going to fight.

Tess: Um, for what?

Me: For my man.
