Adam knew that showing up at The Dahlmann Campus Inn where the Distinguished Woman of Science Awards banquet was being held was a bad idea. Eli wasn't going to be happy to see him. Kevin Chambers especially wasn't going to be happy to see him. But Adam had never been much good at making people happy. Why start now?

He didn't want to think about all the other reasons he'd shown up. Reasons that had nothing to do with the case and everything to do with hormones and chemistry and the way that dress swept over her body.

He knew it was stupid, but it pissed him off every time he thought about Chambers standing there in his thousand-dollar tuxedo and putting his hands all over her.

Damn it, he didn't need this shit.

He illegally parked the Tahoe near the grand portico of the hotel. A young female parking attendant with platform boots and an eyebrow ring approached, but Adam flashed his badge and she backed off. The main doors took him into a marble-walled lobby with bronze sculptures and a huge glass and mahogany chess set.

A circular staircase led to the ballrooms on the mezzanine level. He took the stairs two at a time to the top. Two young men looked up from the ticket table when he walked into the common area outside the ballroom. Adam glared at the men. Neither of them said a word when he passed by the table. The band was jazzing up a 1940s swing tune when he entered the main ballroom.

Inside, couples danced on a huge platform glittering with a thousand pin lights. A buffet table heaped with food lined the wall to his right. To his left, another long, gowned tabled offered up cholesterol and sugar in the form of fancy little cakes and strawberries dipped in chocolate. Adam guessed there were a thousand people in attendance. He began looking for a slender brunette in a royal blue dress.

He spotted her ten minutes later at the bar, talking with an older man who looked like a cross between Boy George and Colonel Sanders. University type. Aging hippie who'd never seen fit to cut his hair. Eli held a stemmed glass in her hand. Red wine, he noticed. She laughed at something the man said. Her head went back slightly, and Adam noticed the slender column of her throat. He saw pale flesh that shimmered silkily in the light. The shadow of cleavage that swept down to generous breasts. A waist he could span with his hands…

Never taking his eyes from her, he skirted a table and threaded through a group of silver-haired men. He wasn't sure why he hadn't noticed before just how attractive she was. Maybe he'd been too blinded by who she was and how she fit into the case. Maybe because he knew pursuing her would complicate things. Adam didn't need complications. He was doing well just to make it through the goddamned day.

He assured himself it was just his hormones kicking in after a three-year hiatus.
