They all jammed into Sylviaâs office twenty minutes later. Evan sat in her leather desk chair, because of course he did.
The reasons for Connor to dislike the guy kept piling up.
Sylvia and Maddie took the other chairs and Ben and Connor stood by the door. Connor thought it might be good to be this close to the exit. He didnât see a reason to be trapped in here any longer than necessary.
âWe have notes without fingerprints.â Ben took over the conversation after the initial passing out of water and coffee. Liquor and pie would need to wait. âThreats that might link back to the dead PI, but why would he leave them for Maddie? What does a PI gain from that sort of behavior?â
âHe could be working for someone else,â Evan said. âCompletely unrelated. Itâs possible weâre jumping to conclusions.â
Ben shrugged. âPossible but not likely.â
Maddie had turned her chair around so she could face everyone in the room. Up until that point sheâd been busy staring into her coffee cup, but at Benâs comment she perked up. âThere is no way the PI on an assignment thousands of miles away from homeâa home where I once livedâjust happens to pick this island where Iâm hiding out. That coincidence is too much to believe.â
âAgreed. Thatâs why Iâve made a request for a review of his client files and computer.â Ben talked in clipped sentences, fully back in command and clearly not ceding the floor to Evan. âTomorrow Iâll start a search of the island to figure out where he was staying before he was killed and see if we can find anything to direct us there.â
âI can do that,â Evan said, as if anyone asked him to step up.
Connor shook his head. âYouâre out of your jurisdiction.â
âMaddie is my responsibility,â Evan shot back.
âOkay, letâs stop this.â Maddie raised her hand. âAnd, Evan? Not anymore.â
Evan ignored her comment and kept his attention on Connor. He sat back in the big chair. Lounged there, looking like he was running a meeting. âAre we in the middle of a turf war?â
Because thatâs probably how the guy saw this, as some sort of battle. âMy only goal is to keep her safe.â
He was trying to prove another point. He wasnât even sure what it was but he hated the idea of letting Evan win at anything.
Evan folded his hands over his stomach. âAnd your qualifications to guard her are what?â
âThatâs enough. Evan does have the expertise. No one is debating that.â Ben made the point, then winced as if to apologize after the fact.
Maddie sighed at him. âYouâre not helping.â
âI want you safe.â Evan delivered the comment as if it was news. âIâm not going to dick around, feeding your boyfriendâs ego at your expense.â
Fuck this guy. âYou being the only competent male on the planet.â
Maddie looked at Sylvia. âDo you notice how none of them bother to ask me what I want?â
Sylvia nodded. âTypical.â
Okay, yeah. She made her point. Both women did. Evan might have him revved up and pissed off but the person he was trouncing on was Maddie.
