âCome on! You have to tell us!â Apryl screamed. She all but leaned over in my face when she did it. I got it. I was the spy, unofficially, since I never agreed to go and report back to any of them. They, all of them, looked at me like it was some sort of obligation. Probably because I was one of them.
âItâs because you are one of them, isnât it?â Brad accused, which was rather shocking and ironic, considering what I was thinking. Not that it wasnât true, it was completely true. I was a child of two worlds, three in reality. Those worlds didnât seem to be getting along at the moment. The shock was in who it came from. Brad had always seemed so prim and proper, above all this petty teenager stuff.
âLook, just like I wouldnât tell them about anything we do, I canât tell you about this. It is very personal to them,â I explained, or tried to. They met it with a chorus of sighs and people turning their backs on me. Even those I thought my closest friends, of course it had been just a few days. The movie they had paused turned back on, and attention went right back to that. I didnât exist to them, and to be honest, I was okay with that.
Actually, that was stupid for me to even think that. I wasnât okay with it. I still didnât remember anything from my life pre-Nortons. That is what I had decided to call the life I couldnât remember. What I could remember was post-Nortons because I had to assume they were the ones that turned me, and at this point I wanted to assume they did so for some righteous reason. I couldnât really bring myself to accept anything else. I remembered my life with them. It was great. We were a family, and I felt like I belonged. That was something I needed to feel, more than well⦠I canât really say air itself, but letâs just say it is a necessity, and now I sat here, not belonging.
Mrs. Bolden stroked my hair as she passed the chair I was in, and sat in the one closest to me, which had appeared to be no-man's-land before. She smiled at me gently, with almost compassion in her black eyes. âGive them some time,â she whispered just above the sound of the air moving around us, but just loud enough for me, and only me, to hear. âYou did what was right.â The hand that had stroked my hair reached over and gripped my own. I wondered if she meant it, or if this was all just one of the reactions she and her husband tried to teach us to appear more human.
My isolation lasted most of the night. Make that all night. I donât believe Mike letting me know, âSunâs coming up,â as he walked by was a sign of forgiveness. Back down in my room, I didnât have many choices available.
