CHAPTER 22

Dustin, George and Jason sat on a two-seater sofa as the girls in the massage parlor led clients through the lounge. Dustin sat on one side, Jason on the other. George flanked Jason’s other side, sitting on an armrest, Dustin’s phone still in his hand.

As they talked, the women led a changing procession of men from the stairs to the hallway. The men wore excited expressions as they walked, more than one winking or raising a cheeky eyebrow at the seated trio. A second procession of men flowed back in the opposite direction. Their expressions pensive, their gaze on the floor.

“I don’t know anything about a doctored report.” Jason hunched over and kneaded his palm, squinting with a tense grimace. A chunky watch rolled around his thin wrist as he worked. “We sent our findings straight to Corgen.”

Dustin watched a fat man in a business suit emerge from the hallway and glance at him with alarm. The man took a phone out of his suit jacket and put its dark screen to his ear. Lowering his head, he hurried across the lounge and disappeared down the stairs without uttering a word. Faker, Dustin thought.

“The Strain Five report must have been doctored,” George said. “The results of the trial I received showed major problems. Genetic damage.”

Jason stopped massaging his hands. “I can’t talk about this.” He looked at George. “How much do you want for that video? Name your price.”

“It’s not for sale,” George said. “At any price.”

Dustin noticed Jason’s watch was a Rolex. “Slow down there, George,” Dustin said. He thought about a Corvette ZR1 and the types of girls he could get with a Corvette ZR1. “I might have a price.”

“First, you tell us about that report. Then, you’ll get the video,” George said. “I want to hear about the problems with Strain Five.”

Killjoy, Dustin thought.

“It depends on your definition of ‘problem’ I suppose,” Jason said.

“The corn is toxic and approved by the FDA,” George said. “Calling it a problem is understating the issue. It’s more like a disaster.”

Jason shrugged. “The strain was specifically engineered to cause genetic disruption. It met its project requirements. I’d call that a success, not a disaster.” He leaned back in his seat.

Dustin craned forward to get a good look at Jason’s face. “It was designed to hurt people?”

“Most people,” Jason said. “I never got to see the full project specification, but from what I could gather, they wanted to release Strain Five into the food industry and have the entire nation eating it. With corn being such a ubiquitous ingredient in our food, they were assured most of the country’s population would be exposed to it.”

“What on earth for?” George said.

“They’re playing a numbers game with randomized genetic disruption.” Jason shrugged. “They’re pulling the handle on hundreds of millions of human genome slot machines, hoping for a jackpot. What happens when the reels come up triple bars, I don’t know. My position didn’t give me access to that information. All I know
