Chapter Ten

Monday afternoon

Amber may have called the cake “stupid,” but it was still delicious comfort food, and I wasn’t going to let it go to waste. I dug in with a large fork as I replayed the conversation in my mind. I felt I had said all the right things—well, other than lying and hiding my verbal assault of Blackwood at H2O. I regretted that decision now, but it was too late. I couldn’t change the past, and the present also seemed all too mucked up to be saved. But perhaps I could still save the future, our company, and my friendship with Amber.

She knew how to hold a grudge. The last time we had a big fight, it took us almost three days to make peace. I hoped this time it wouldn’t take that long. I was willing to apologize to Amber for hiding the truth, if only she would be willing to listen.

Regardless of how and when Amber and I buried the hatchet, the issues surrounding Blackwood and our business relationship with him still remained all too present and pretty high on our list of priorities. I had to know the reason behind Blackwood’s very public and very ugly fight with his sister. And it was more than just simple curiosity. I had a vested interest in the financial well-being of his company. If they folded, they would take us down. I wouldn’t allow him to flush us down the drain.

I licked the spoon, allowing the cheesecake’s scrumptiousness to engulf my senses in a much-needed moment of total relaxation. I closed my eyes and hummed as I chewed on a crunchy piece of chocolate. Mhhhh.

And I stared at the third slice of cake fighting the obvious dilemma: do I devour it right away or do I allow my stomach to digest the previous two? I settled for the latter option with a certain amount of regret. Then I thought about how to find out the true state of Blackwood Advertising finances.

The most logical choice was to hire a private investigator specializing in such matters. But that would take some time and a few thousand dollars. I could finagle my way around our business accounts or use some of my own money, but if Amber somehow found out, that might be the final blow to our relationship.

We could try to ask Blackwood, but that approach assumed Amber would go along with it and Blackwood would tell us the entire truth. At this point, I wasn’t sure this was the best course of action.

Then my mind went to James. He was a cop and had access to resources that were off limits to most common folks. He knew a lot of people and had many contacts. One or more of them could efficiently, yet unofficially, inquire about Blackwood Advertising. But would James go for it? I didn’t know him very well, but I knew what I would be asking from him was a big favor. And was it legal? Did
