CHAPTER TWENTY-SEVEN

Bailey pulled out of Rico’s driveway bright and early the next day. She wanted to get an early start, find them a safe motel to begin with. Now that they had identities, had credit cards that couldn’t be traced, she felt safer upgrading from the sleazy motel they’d chosen that night in Gulfport. That didn’t mean Marty would be getting a suite with room service, a fact she’d already conveyed to her.

“I feel like we’re going to war,” Marty said as she went over the checklist Bailey had given Rico, a list he’d filled without question. “Although bullet proof vests sound good.” She looked up. “You’re not expecting me to know how to use these weapons, right?”

“You’re going to have to keep a handgun, yes. I want you to feel comfortable carrying one. The rifles, no. I don’t know that we’ll need them, but I wanted to be covered.”

“Night vision glasses?”

“A must.”

Marty put the list down. “Do we have a plan yet?” Bailey shook her head. “Not really, no. Number one priority is finding someplace safe to stay. I think we should start with looking up Rafael Ortiz.”

“He was who again?”

“One of the original investigators.”

“Right. He and Vargas. And you already spoke with Vargas.”

“Vargas is still on the force and wouldn’t talk. Ortiz is retired. He might be willing to shed some light on the case. If he remembers. He’s probably early seventies by now. He retired right after this case.”

“You think he might know who the Scorpion is?”

“I doubt it. There may be very few people who actually know who he is. But he might know who in the police force is corrupt.

That would be a start.”

“You mean besides Lieutenant Marsh?”

“Right. We can pretty much count him in. As soon as we’re settled, I’m going to call in. I want them to think I’m afraid to come back.”

“But you want them to know you think they’re behind it?”

“Just sort of feel them out, that’s all.”

“And you’re sure our phones can’t be traced? Rico said something about the signal bouncing between towers.”

“Yeah. They won’t be able to get a lock on the signal, it’ll just bounce around and they won’t be able to get a fix on it. And if they trace the number, it’ll come back to an account in California.” Marty shook her head and smiled. “I just don’t understand all this spy stuff. And surprisingly, I’m not really afraid anymore.”

“Afraid?”

“Yeah, afraid. This is your life, you’re used to this kind of stuff. I’m a reporter. I’m used to sitting down and talking to people. And the fact that my beach house got shot up like we were in a gangster movie, well, I don’t think that’s even registered yet with me. I mean, we were running and hiding, I didn’t even 152

have time to consider what it really meant.”

“That someone wanted you dead?”

“Yes. And the manner by which they were willing to go about it. It’s crazy.”

“Shooting up the place like that was more for show than anything.
