Ash nearly toppled his chair backward standing up. “Ms. Albrecchio, is there something I can do for you?”

“I didn’t mean to interrupt your dinner.” She held an armful of books. “The door was cracked wide open and…”

His door was sealed, but what could he do? Kick her out? “Please, come in. Can I get you something to drink? We were just finished.”

“Oh, no. I was only dropping these off. Like I said I would this afternoon.” She trooped inside and set the books next to Adelaide, who had risen from her seat—more like shot up as if fired from a canon.

“Mr. Scott, I should go check on Maribelle.”

Adelaide learned fast, adding that bit of formality to the scene. He appreciated it. “Thank you, Miss Bloom.” He was having a good time with her, amazingly, as if they were any two people having dinner, getting to know one another. Sally didn’t need to know that.

Adelaide tried to scoot by, but Sally grasped her arm. “You recognize these, don’t you, Adelaide?”

“I recognize a lot of things.” She then freed herself and marched toward the door.

Adelaide had not told him her and Sally’s whole story, that was for certain. She might have if they hadn’t been interrupted.

Adelaide paused in the doorway and twisted back to face them.

“You should know Mr. Scott is a terrific father. He does everything by the book already.” She glanced down at the stack of paperbacks. “But I wouldn’t recommend the top one. It does psychological damage to tell a child, or anyone for that matter, that there’s only one way to live—your way.”

“My, you certainly have opinions, don’t you?” Sally tittered a little as if trying to make light of the situation.

Adelaide’s right eye twitched, probably suppressing an eye roll. He was rather amused by it—when it wasn’t aimed at him.

“Adelaide, I’ll see you upstairs when I go to check on Maribelle in a bit.” The minute the words came out of his mouth, he knew they were the wrong things to utter in front of Sally. She had seen the photographs, after all. “Upstairs” implied too much.

If, however, she’d noticed he’d let Adelaide’s informal address slip—using her first name—Sally didn’t let on.

The woman stepped forward another foot. “I also came by to ask you something.” She continued to inch closer to him, and her perfume crashed in on him again. “I wondered if you’d like to go to this art gallery opening with me. It’s a local gallery filled with local artists. Probably not anything remotely close to what you see in New York, but I find it’s important to support the community.”

He sent his gaze back to her, not realizing his eyes had locked on Adelaide as she’d sashayed out.

Sally cocked her head. “Unless…” She peered behind her toward where Adelaide had disappeared. “…you’re otherwise occupied.”

Good time or not, he wouldn’t have her get the wrong idea. “No. Not occupied. What evening?” With any luck, at least a local photographer would see them together and without a nanny in sight.
