Two hours later Molly walked alone across the school practice field. The sun had set behind the dark green hills west of town a few minutes earlier, and the heat of the day had lifted. The ground beneath her feet was already covered in dew. She could feel the wetness seeping through her shoes. Molly tucked her hands into her shorts pockets and wished she had worn a jacket.

She looked to the sky. The moon was full. It shone brightly above the tree line. Of course there’s a full moon, she thought. What’s next? Howling wolves? Bats?

As she approached the shed, she could see that Scarlett was already there. “Hey.”

“Hey,” said Scarlett.

Molly opened up her arms and walked forward to embrace her. Scarlett put up her hands to stop her. “Um, no thanks,” said Scarlett.

“Too much?” asked Molly.

“Too much,” said Scarlett.

Molly quickly tried to move past the awkward moment. “Are you ready for this?” Molly asked, taking a step backwards.

“Why not,” said Scarlett. Then she looked over Molly’s shoulder. “What are they doing here?”

Molly turned. Walking toward them were Daneen and Pooja. Molly smiled and ran to them, sweeping them up in a big hug. “I wasn’t sure you’d come,” she said.

“Thank her,” said Pooja looking at Daneen. “I don’t know how she talked me into this.”

The three of them approached the shed. “Hi Scarlett,” said Daneen.

Scarlett didn’t respond. Instead she scowled and looked at Molly. “You invited these two?”

“I did,” said Molly. “I know the history between you guys isn’t great.”

“But we want to help,” said Daneen.

“Really,” said Scarlett sarcastically.

“They do,” said Molly. “That’s why they’re here. We all want to break this curse.”

“We’re in this together,” said Daneen. “And we’re sorry for how we’ve treated you in the past.” She looked at Pooja. “Isn’t that right?” Daneen elbowed her.

“Um, yeah,” said Pooja. “That’s right.”

Scarlett looked away. The four of them stood in silence. Molly thought about putting her hand on Scarlett’s shoulder as a way to comfort her. But she quickly remembered her awkward hug attempt a moment ago and stopped. Instead she simply said, “You can trust us.”

“I trust you,” said Scarlett. “Barely.” She nodded at Pooja and Daneen. “I don’t trust them.”

Molly nodded. “I get it,” she said. “But they’re here. And we’re here. Can we put the past behind us for now and see what we can do to end this curse?”

Scarlett kicked at the dirt.

“Hey,” said Pooja. “We’re trying to be nice to you. Don’t you get that?”

“You’ve never been nice to me,” Scarlett snapped back.

“Whoa. Relax.”

“Don’t tell me to relax!”

“There’s that anger again.”

Scarlett looked at Molly. “See what I’m talking about?” she said. “It’s always the same with them.”

Molly pulled her aside. “Don’t listen to Pooja. She’s harmless. But she’s also nice when you get to know her. Pooja and Daneen could be your friends if you gave them a chance and opened up a little more.”

“I don’t want to be their friends,” said Scarlett.

“Okay,” sighed Molly. “Then let’s not worry about that right now.
