Chapter 5

Calain was a little furious to learn that Cassandra had run off to sacrifice herself yet again, but for the sake of the peace, she swallowed her anger. It seemed to her she had been swallowing her anger for days and days. For she could feel it whenever Zelda experienced pleasure. She could feel that evil witch making love to her!

And Zelda was enjoying Melvalda’s touch. That hurt probably more than anything else. And the more she had to endure Zelda’s ecstasy at the hands of another, the more she began to wonder if she should even bother going to rescue her. Maybe Zelda had joined Raven’s Cross. Maybe she liked being with Melvalda more than Calain.

Because Cassandra had left the party, the knights had taken to keeping watch one at a time again. That night when they made camp, Gweneth immediately went to sleep, and it was Selene’s turn to keep watch.

Calain did not prepare a pallet of leaves. Instead, after helping to set up camp, she strapped on her traveling satchel and stood pointedly over Selene, who was sitting beside the fire.

Selene looked up, and realizing what Calain meant to do, she shot to her feet. “Calain! What—!”

“I am leaving, Selene,” said Calain, “and there is nothing you can say that will change my mind.”

Selene shook her head. “But why? What changed?”

“Nothing,” said Calain. “Things have always been so, only I was too foolish to see it.”

“Calain, wait. Talk to me,” Selene said. “The forest is too dangerous for you to—”

“So is loving Zelda,” said Calain with a sneer. “Do yourself a favor and leave her service. She cares for none of us. Only her own base pleasure—”

“That is not so!” said Selene adamantly.

Calain looked at Selene in sympathy. “Look at you, still under her thrall. Perhaps Melvalda was right about all of us.” She glanced at Gweneth, who was sleeping soundly. “Perhaps Gwen was right as well. Loving Zelda is a fool’s errand.”

Selene’s lips tightened. “Do you have any idea how much Zelda dotes upon you? What the rest of us would give to have her look at us the way she looks at you? She adores you!”

“She uses me,” said Calain.

Selene’s eyes were still impatient, though Calain could see she had resigned herself to the fact that she could not change Calain’s mind. Instead, she said in a weary voice, “Where will you go?”

“Back to Koradara, for I am a free woman there. Perhaps I shall return to Wolf Fortress. Or find a new woman and pledge myself to her. A woman who is true.”

Selene smiled sadly. “You will never find a woman like Zelda, and you know it.”

Calain scowled. “Spare me your attempts at conversion. I no longer worship at Zelda’s altar. Fare thee well, Selene.” And with that, she turned and took off into the darkness. She did not look back.
