Hours after they’d returned from the Caddo settlement, Marco poked at the embers in the fire with a stick while he watched Paige make her preparations for bed. She dipped out a cup of clean water from the pail warming on the hearth and scrubbed her face, then another to brush her teeth. When she’d finished, she poured the few drops left around the edge of the flames, where it sizzled and hissed, the only sound in the cabin.

And then she combed her hair. She closed her eyes as the silken strands fell effortlessly through the teeth of the comb and kissed her neck, only to be lifted and combed again.

An urge to comb that golden hair for her swept over Marco, its current as strong as the river that had carved the valley where this lodge stood. He wanted to feel her silken locks slide between his fingers. He wanted to kiss her neck like they did.

Which was why he stayed as far away from her as he could in the tight confines of the cabin. More than physical distance lay between them tonight, though. She’d been quiet on the way home, offering no clue to what she’d been thinking.

He wondered if she’d been thinking, as he had, that their relationship had shifted today. They were no longer mere kidnapper and victim, cop and criminal. Once again they’d become man and woman.

He couldn’t get her out of his mind. It was crazy, his obsession for her. He didn’t have time for it. Toby could distract the men in town for a day, two at best, but then Marco would have to move. Do something. He should be figuring a way out of this mess, not digging himself in deeper by fantasizing about what couldn’t be.

But sweet Jesus, the way she’d melted against him on that bridge… The way she’d looked at him while he’d worked on the schoolhouse roof…

Maybe all this fresh air had him feeling feisty. Maybe knowing that the chances of him coming out of his present situation alive were slim gave him little reason to worry about tomorrow and every reason to make the most of tonight.

She stood, walked to the cot and laid out the oversize sweatshirt she wore to bed. Even the way she walked turned him on. Her stride was compact, efficient. Like she always had somewhere to go. Always knew her purpose.

He loved that about her, that she was always so sure of herself. Always knew what she wanted.

Today, at least for a time, she’d wanted him.

As he wanted her.

He was behind her when she stopped at the end of the bed, his hands on hers when she crossed them over her body and took hold of the hem of her thermal shirt.

“Don’t,” he said simply. “Not tonight. If you do, I don’t know if I can stay away from you.”

She turned in his arms and his body’s inevitable response frightened him with its force. The tightening. The surge of blood. The aching fullness.
