CHAPTER 35
DELONG PAUSED and turned his head to examine Zhixian. “What has gotten into you? First you ask about my father, and now you’re asking about Cangji. I thought you were never the type to care about knowing nonhumans.”
“I am merely pointing out things that I feel do not add up,” Zhixian retorted gruffly. “In the first place, why is that xian participating in group missions when he would be clearly better off working alone? Why let mortals exploit him? Why risk the possibility that others steal the relic before he can reach it? Why—” He glanced at Delong and did not finish.
Delong looked ahead again. “Well, I think it is obvious that I like him, so there is nothing odd about my behavior.”
Zhixian did not bother to hide the disgust on his face.
“As for your other question, I believe Xuanshe already answered this,” he said. “He doesn’t want attention from the Heavenly Court. After all, mortals stand no chance against what is here, and if it weren’t for Cangji, we’d all be dead ten times over. The gods up there would not give a second thought to a few mortals breaching this place, probably because they assume we will fail. A lone xian, however, is a different story.” Delong thought about his master and felt a little guilty. She had tried so hard to prevent others from taking the relics, but in the end, Delong was disobeying her every wish.
“He clearly does not care about the consequences of these items falling into mortal hands,” Zhixian said. “By blending in with us, he invites chaos.”
Delong crossed his arms. “It’s not his fault.”
“How is it not?” Zhixian growled. “He probably knew Yuan He’an was possessed, probably knew that Chengxin was up to no good, and yet he did nothing to expose them!”
“Now how would he know Chengxin’s motivations?” Delong snapped. “He’s a god, but he’s not omnipotent—no one can read minds, not even gods!”
“You sure seem to think you know a lot about gods,” Zhixian said flatly. “I recall Xuanshe could speak in our heads—what makes you so sure she can’t hear what we think?”
“I—” Delong felt his cheeks burn. At least, he was sure Cangji did not read minds because then Cangji would have probably killed him long ago if he had known about Delong’s fantasies. But of course Delong could not tell Zhixian that. He coughed when he remembered a particularly inappropriate dream that had involved Cangji in blindfolds and chains.
“He should have killed them,” Zhixian continued, clearly oblivious to Delong’s hidden discomfort. “Isn’t he a god? All the more reason he has the right to punish those scum.”
After all they had seen and gone through, Zhixian was still obsessed about so-called justice? Delong massaged his temples and shook his head. They had more important things to do right now than wonder about Cangji’s motives. For one, they were still hopelessly stuck in this labyrinth.
“If this bothers you so much, maybe you should ask him yourself,” Delong said.
“Yes, and
