Sadie points out the different sorority and fraternity houses as they drive down the street.

“Sixty percent of Yates students are part of the Greek system,” Sadie points out. “Greek life is great because once you leave college, you always have a network of sisters and brothers. And the women of Omega Phi are known as leaders. Did you know that some of the top female CEOs are Omega Phi sisters?”

“No, I didn’t,” Tessa says. She’s never thought about joining a sorority. Is this why Ellen wanted them to stop by the sorority house?

Ellen leans forward between the seats. “I sure hope I get into Omega Phi next year.”

Sadie looks at Ellen in the rearview mirror and gives a weird smile. “I sure hope you do too.”

Tessa looks at Sadie and back at Ellen, wondering why Ellen wouldn’t be able to join her own sister’s sorority.

As they drive across campus, Sadie points out the other buildings—the Student Union, various academic buildings, some dorms. The soccer stadium is at the far end of campus.

“Last year, we got a brand new workout facility,” Sadie explains, pointing to a small building in between both stadiums. “It’s just for the athletes on school teams. Open to us twenty-four hours a day.”

“That’s awesome,” Ellen says. She leans forward again and says to Tessa, “We can work out there together next year!”

“And,” Sadie continues with a proud smirk, “there’s a smoothie bar.”

Ellen gasps, this time grabbing at Tessa’s arm. “We can get smoothies every day!”

Tessa nods, trying to keep up with Ellen’s excitement. A smoothie bar and private weight room are cool, she thinks. But, right now, all I want is to see some soccer.

When they enter the stadium, Sadie leads them down to the field. The grass and white lines seem brighter and cleaner than any field Tessa has ever played on. On the far end is a large scoreboard with a jumbo screen. Rather than the bleachers Tessa is used to seeing, the crowd seating is made up of rows of red and white chairs.

Sadie takes them to the locker room where her teammates have started to gather for practice. The girls smile and wave at Sadie as she passes. She leads Tessa and Ellen to Coach Miller’s office.

“I’ll be honest with you,” Sadie says in a low voice, “Coach has already been meeting with other girls. But some of our top prospects have chosen other schools. So the spot is still available, but you have to prove that you’re the best choice.”

“Thanks again for everything,” Tessa says.

“Just don’t embarrass me,” Sadie says, her voice suddenly turning cold. “I’ve put my neck out for you.”

“She won’t,” Ellen snaps at her sister. “What is wrong with you?”

“I’m just trying to stress the importance of following through.”

Tessa just nods at this, beginning to feel overwhelmed.

“Well,” Sadie says, giving her a stiff hug, “good luck.”

Tessa and Ellen watch Sadie head back to the locker room.

“I’ll be in the stands when you’re done,” Ellen says.

“Thanks for coming with me today,” Tessa says.
