âThat was a fast bath.â Frannie sat, tucked into her small bed. âIâm glad. Iâm tiwed.â
âMe, too, Frannie.â Jenna stooped and pressed a kiss to her forehead. âYou had a big dayâfull of adventures. I bet youâll sleep good.â
âLike a log?â Frannie grinned.
âYep, youâll sleep like a big old log.â She kissed her again.
âWill you tell Doctaw Buzz thank you again?â Frannie hugged Clarence the giraffe, her favorite stuffed animal. âBig, big thank you? And a hug? Fwum me?â
âI will tell him.â She tapped Frannie on the nose. âYou get some sleep and have beautiful dreams.â
âOkay,â Frannie said, yawning widely as she flopped back against her pillows.
Jenna paused in the doorway and turned off the overhead light. Frannieâs nightlight clicked on, projecting a slowly spinning starburst on the opposite wall. âNight,â she said again, leaving the door barely cracked.
Jenna peeked in on Biddy, too. Her baby sister had kicked off her blankets and was sound asleepâwith her little arms thrown over her head. She blew her a kiss and tiptoed from the room, pulling the door shut behind her.
Then she froze.
Buzz was downstairs.
Monica and Garrett were upstairs getting ready for bed.
Meaning...sheâd be alone with Buzz. Alone-alone. She shook her head, staring up at the ceiling overhead. We can have dinner and a conversation, like two normal people. That was the key. Conversation. If they were talkingâand eatingâtheyâd be too occupied to get caught up in the staring...and other stuff. Right. Sure. Who am I kidding?
Sheâd invited him to dinner. After everything heâd done tonight, it was the least she could do. Hiding up here was...cowardly. Iâm no coward. She forced herself downstairs and into the kitchen. Where she froze. âWhat happened?â Candles were lit, sitting in their crystal candlesticks, in the middle of the table. The table had been covered in a clean non-plastic kid-friendly tablecloth and had two places setâwith her motherâs fine china.
Buzz had been studying the photos covering the front of her refrigerator but he turned now, shrugging. âThis wasnât your idea?â
She stared at him. âA romantic candlelight dinner?â Was he serious? No. He couldnât be. âAre you serious? Iâm pretty good at multitasking but Iâm not sure how I would have managed this and bath time and Biddy and Frannieâs bedtime routine.â
He grinned. âSo far, youâve managed to make the impossible look easy so...â
Jenna smiled in spite of herself. âThank you but this is all Monica.â Just when she thought she and her sister had finally reached an understanding, she went and did...this. She took a minute, assessing Monicaâs work. âIâm impressed.â She had to admit, Monica had done well. âWhere are the rest of the chairs?â She frowned at the two chairs. âHow could anyone comfortably eat that close?â The chairs were squished together, no space between them.
Buzz kept on grinning. âYou do have more than two? I was thinking that would make things awful inconvenient at mealtime.â
âEight, total.â She really wished heâd stop grinning that way. âIâm sorry about this. Monica watches a lot of those reality matchmaking shows.
