As Isaac drove back to the ranch, his mind kept wandering to Savannah. Actually, it didn’t so much stray as it raced. His mind replayed every minute they’d spent together. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d had this much fun with a woman while wearing clothes. She was funny, with a clever mind. He admired her quick wit and quirky sense of humor, on those occasions it peeked out.

It was thrilling to be with someone who appreciated his intellect as much as his ability to party with the best of them.

He was ready for a change. He wanted a relationship with a woman with depth. A woman he could talk to about his hopes and dreams for the future. He also wanted a physical relationship with Savannah. This afternoon he’d wanted nothing more than to make love with her on the soft bed of grass. He’d known she was willing, but she’d also been vulnerable. And he couldn’t take advantage of that vulnerability.

Jillian and Miles were gone when he returned to the ranch. His mother had Mia on her lap and was spooning mushy peas and some brown gunk into the baby’s mouth. It all looked terrible, but Mia kept opening her mouth whenever the spoon came near, so she must like it.

He pulled out a chair and reached for the baby. “I can feed her if you want.”

“She’s just about done.”

“I don’t see how she eats that stuff. It’s n-a-s-t-y.”

Michelle laughed. “You say that now. You used to eat it. All of you did.”

“I don’t remember that.”

“You were a baby. And it’s baby food.”

“It was probably so traumatic that I blanked it out.”

His parents laughed.

“I like Savannah,” his father said. “She’s nice.”

“And not at all your usual type,” Michelle added and then gave Mia a sippy cup, which she drained in a minute. Michelle wiped Mia’s mouth with the bib that dangled across the baby’s chest, unsnapped it, then stood and placed her in the playpen. Mia instantly began pounding on a toy piano.

“What does that mean?”

“Don’t get all huffy. It wasn’t a criticism. Just an observation. You tend to date...you know. Flashier women. Lots of makeup, the latest fashions—”

Criticism or not, Miles felt compelled to cut off his mother and defend Savannah. “Savannah doesn’t need all of those things to be appealing.”

“I know. And I’m not putting her down, nor the women you usually date. I’m the first to believe a woman should do what she wants with her body.”

“So do I.”

She smiled and patted his cheek. “I know. That’s because we raised you right.”

“But you like her?” Isaac asked. He admired his parents and wanted them to approve of his choice. More than that, he knew they were good judges of character.

“Yes,” his parents said in unison.

Happy with that response, Isaac stood. “I need to get Mia home for her nap. She’ll be a lot more comfortable in her crib than in her playpen. Thanks again for watching her.”

“You know I love having a little girl to spoil.
