THE H.E.R.P.E.

Clayton looked at the general and the admiral. "You've already turned this into a disaster and you haven't even started the system yet."

"Clayton," Admiral Staley said, "there was a reason for you to be given a demonstration of the consequences of violating the security of this project. Now that a significantly opposite effect has been achieved and there appear to be social and political consequences, there's no other choice than to begin Operation Snow Den immediately."

"Yes, I agree Briton," General Kessler said.

He turned to Clayton, "Mr. Powell we're going to start the machine and let it run. This time we aren't going to stop it until Briton and I tell you to stop it. Do you understand? Because if you don't, I don't want there to be any surprises at what turns out to be your fate or your girlfriend's fate," he said pointing at the screen, then he made a slashing motion across his neck.

"You and your threats, general," Clayton laughed. "You ought to open a greeting card company."

An uneasy truce had existed between Clayton Powell III and General Quentin Kessler following their recent altercation. General Kessler had learned the hard way that getting rid of Dr. Greenbaum did not get rid of the concerns Greenbaum had regarding the security of the project.

And, there was still the issue of control. They were not sure how to turn off the H.E.R.P.E. once it reached full capacity without destroying the capacitors and possibly themselves. During their experiments, the process of bouncing microwave energy between satellites reduced fifteen per cent of the energy of the beam each time the beam was reflected. However, once the circuit was complete and running at one hundred per cent capacity, according to their calculations, the loss of energy within the system diminished completely as the microwave grid became a closed system of magnetic plasma in the vacuum of space, keeping a perpetual steady state of electromagnetic energy within the field, as long as the electromagnetic pulse continued to reach the satellite relay from the H.E.R.P.E. on Earth hundreds of miles below.

Between Clayton and Briton, there had been a few discussions about the after-effects of the eruption.

"What are you talking about?" the General asked.

"I'm talking about the extent of the destruction. Once you turn on the machine, it's not like your lawnmower where you give it more gas to make it go faster. What happens once the H.E.R.P.E. begins to pulsate energy is just the beginning of the problem."

"Is there something you aren't telling us Clayton?" Admiral Staley asked.

"While I was working with Melissa on her dissertation, we started to have some definite indications of correlations between volcanoes and the movement of the tectonic plates underneath Western North America," he said.

"We know all about it Clayton," Admiral Staley assured him. "Dr. Greenbaum told us about the tectonic plates. He had a PowerPointless demonstration and everything."

"Then why didn't you listen to him?" Clayton asked. "He must have told you the Juan De Fuca Plate might slip during an eruption.
