THEY HID FOR THREE days in Ternia thus, making love morning and night, taking turns on watch. . . .taking turns on Zelda. Calain and Selene learned to get along, though only just. Calain still occasionally became angry and bitter should Selene place her face between Zelda’s thighs. Eventually, the two knights tasted Zelda’s sex together, though how it had happened, Zelda wasn’t sure. One thing led to another, and before she knew it, they were both between her legs, kissing her thighs, sucking the lips of her sex, fingering her slowly as they sucked on her clitoris, bringing her to a trembling climax.

Zelda awoke one morning snuggled between the two knights, their muscular bodies like a hard wall around her. They were tousled and undone from the night’s exertions and talking quietly about their next move, the best places they could hide in the city, how they were going to earn coin. When they noticed Zelda was awake, they playfully kissed her cheeks either side, over and over, and she squealed with laughter until they had stopped. Breathless, she rose from the bed and washed herself at the washbasin.

Selene rose as well and began plucking her scattered armor pieces from the floor. Calain slouched into a chair beside the low-dwindling fire.

According to Selene, they were running out of gold. To hide in a city like Ternia was expensive, unless one had no issue sleeping in the gutter. They had six crowns and three coppers between them.

Zelda thought about beginning a practice as a healer or perhaps selling potions and tonics. But she had to remind herself that they couldn’t make moves to settle in a place permanently yet: they still had yet to find Gweneth and Cassandra in Arinol.

What Zelda needed to do was a lesser skill, like laundry or dishwashing. The coin from such work could tide them over until they were ready to leave Ternia. But when she brought it up with Calain and Selene, they were both adamantly against it.

“Why?” Zelda demanded impatiently. “We need gold, and I can find work in a lady’s house easily.”

“You risk exposing yourself, my lady,” said Selene grimly. “There are eyes throughout the city. It is safer for you to stay here, hidden in the inn, until Calain and I can move you.”

Move her, as if she were a piece of furniture! Zelda thought irritably. She folded her arms. “All right, what will we do for gold, then?”

“I’ve been winning a lot of card games,” Calain said, shrugging.

Selene’s lips tightened. “I told you to stop gambling our coin! You’re so incredibly irresponsible! That you ever became a Falcon—”

Calain tensed and kicked herself up from the chair. “And what have you been doing to get any gold? So far we have been surviving on my coin!”

Selene stood calmly, armor pieces in her bulging arms, but Zelda could tell by the tightness of her mouth that she was losing patience.

Zelda tiredly pinched the flesh between her eyes, her golden curls tumbling forward. “Fine.
