Sir, I’m texting you as requested. The female passenger has boarded. Do you still want me to wait for you before take-off? How should I proceed?
I think back to my conversation with Michael and his advice for my brother. I never thought I’d have to use it myself.
I only need to type three words:
Let her go.
I exhale. My heart is on that plane with Emma. I may never get it back.
“I’m tired,” Poppy admits and crawls into bed. It’s well past her bedtime, but we needed this time together.
I tuck the covers under her chin and then I turn one of the lights off near her doll shelves.
“No, don’t turn that light off,” she says. “I like to look at the dolls before I fall asleep.” Her dolls are like twelve-inch sculptures. They could fill a museum.
“You probably have the largest collection of anybody.”
“Hardly,” she giggles. “You should see Princess Divina’s collection. She likes to have the best of everything.”
Yeah, that sounds like her. Divina and I have known each other all our lives. I adore her, even though she can get caught up in which person has which title or what they’re wearing. What counts for me, and why we’ve been friends all these years, is that she has a heart of gold—or, as she would correct me, platinum.
“I still don’t understand why you all collect these dolls,” I tell Poppy. All our women friends from Divina to Sass, Bella, Lexi, and even their Granny, collect dolls. Not to mention Emma and her sister.
“We all do it for different reasons.”
“Then why do you do it?”
“They never leave me.”
I didn’t think I could feel any more pain until that moment. Her father died. Her mother abandoned her. And she inherited this political fiancé who barely acknowledges her existence, yet still controls her future.
I slip from Poppy’s room and walk towards my own, pulling out my phone. I only need to call one number to change Poppy’s life—and mine—forever.
“Hello?” Michael’s groggy voice answers.
“It’s me,” I tell him. “In the engagement contract, can we find a way to substitute Emma and Rylan with other family members?”
“I don’t know.” He’s sounding more awake. “What are you thinking?”
“I’m single. If your sister Divina wants the future title of queen, I have one up for grabs. A marriage in name only. But in exchange, Poppy is free.”
He pauses. “It’s possible. As much as I know Divina would love to be a queen,” he chuckles, “I’m certain the only reason she’d even consider doing this is for Rylan. Let me figure some things out on my end. Call you tomorrow.”
Click.
I never thought I’d marry someone without love. No, wait, I still would be. I’d be marrying someone because I love Poppy.
I look down the hallway. Her door is open. I thought I’d closed it. But doors no longer have to be closed for Poppy. Her future will now be her own. Possibly. I had to wait until tomorrow to find out.
But tonight I had to start learning to deal with this heartache that I would have for the rest of my life.
