Chapter 15

We joined Gordy and Katie down on the beach an hour later. The boys and London went for a swim, but Emma hung back with me and Katie.

“I don’t like her,” Katie said, watching London dive gracefully through the waves.

I tried not to gasp in surprise. Katie liked everyone. She was one of the happiest, nicest girls I’d ever met.

“She has that effect on people,” I said.

“Females,” Emma said. “She has that effect on females. Clueless males on the other hand…”

She gestured to the ocean where Gordy, Cal, and Simon followed London through the waves. They were like bewitched puppy dogs. Since two of them were werewolves, that actually wasn’t a bad analogy. I snorted and Emma turned a questioning eyebrow my way.

“It’s just…maybe she has some animal magnetism thing going on,” I said.

Katie didn’t know that paranormal stuff was real, so I couldn’t say, “maybe it’s because London’s a werewolf.” Emma’s eyes narrowed as she turned her gaze back out to sea.

She wasn’t the only one watching the water. Sam stood beside me, sad eyes roving the horizon. His stance reminded me of the stories I’d read about Mary Hallett keeping her vigil on the sea cliffs, waiting for Sam’s return. When he someday made his way into the light, would Sam be reunited with his true love? For his sake, and the sake of Mary, I sure did hope so.

The raw pain on Sam’s face was hard to bear, but it was preferable to watching the Grays leer at every woman in a bathing suit. You’d think they’d never seen a bikini before.

“I think it’s because she’s two-faced,” Katie said.

“What do you mean?” I asked.

I leaned toward Katie and she blushed.

“It’s just…one minute she acts all vulnerable and the next she’s showing off how strong and athletic she is,” Katie said.

Emma nodded.

“She’s like sweet and sour tofu,” Emma said.

“The guys don’t like tofu,” I said.

“You know what I mean,” Emma said.

“Yeah, I do,” I said with a sigh.

“I’m sick of watching The London Show,” Emma said. “Think I’ll catch up on some online petitions. That puppy mill in New Hampshire wasn’t the first and, unfortunately, isn’t the last.”

“I’ll come with,” I said.

Maybe Emma could help me do some online reconnaissance of the Cauldron and Noose. My plan for returning Nera’s amulet to the Salem witches was still pretty sketchy. So far it consisted of breaking in, swapping the fake amulet for the real amulet, and praying we don’t get caught. As far as plans went, it was like facing the zombie apocalypse with a nail file and a bag of Skittles. It might work, but chances were good that I’d die a horrible, painful death.

At least the end would be filled with fruity, candy goodness. And for my dramatic death scene I could whisper, in a creepy, quivery death rattle, taste the rainbow. Boy would those zombies be confused.

“Katie?” Emma asked, pulling me out of my zombie fantasy. Katie shrugged.

“No, you guys go on back,” she said. “I think I’ll go for a swim after all.
