Chapter 8

Tommy

Damian bounced around his apartment, trying to get me to hurry up and get ready.

"I'm working on it. Just give me a couple more minutes to finish my hair."

"We're going to be late."

"We won't be late. Relax. Go watch some sports highlights while you wait. It's just taking longer with you buzzing around me."

He bounced out of the bathroom. I smiled as he left me alone in the bathroom. His excitement continued to build with each new event he took me to, but he seemed particularly proud of this one.

He had taken me to several fancy places already. We had decided that him spending his money on taking me around town was fine because his heart was in the right place. All of the food had been amazing, but I told him that it was getting to be too much for me. I felt like I had to constantly suck in my gut to keep looking good. I just wanted some old-fashioned fun.

"I hear you loud and clear."

I listened carefully for any trace of annoyance or disappointment at needing to change the plans, but couldn't find it.

He cancelled the plans he had for the afternoon and said he had new ones, better ones, ones that required no cover charges or entry fees, but refused to say a word more other than that I should dress casually and wear comfy walking shoes.

Instead of the limo, we walked out the front door and waited for a bus.

"Won't you be mobbed?"

"Nah. Football is great for anyone except the biggest stars. No one knows what we look like without our uniform and helmet on. Well, most of the time, at least."

He was right. Besides, the bus was practically empty. We left his place after the lunch traffic and before after-work rush. During the ride, I started the conversation we had been ignoring.

"So what is going on with you? Don't get me wrong, but why am I even here?"

He didn't answer for a couple blocks. I worried that I had just ruined the day.

"I don't know what's going on. Things have changed for me since I met you. You've awoken pent-up...things...that I didn't know I had trapped in there. When I'm on the field and a defender tries to stop me, I get this anger--that's not quite the right word--but something that makes me just want to push him out of my way or drag him to the ground and pin him there."

He shook his head to clear away that line of thinking.

"I lost it out there the other day. I don't get like that when you are around. I called because I needed your help to find myself. To find calmness again. I guess I just missed you and needed to see you again."

"I don't know what to say to that. It's not fair to me for you to just call me in when things get tough. And what about Nathan? What am I supposed to do about him?"

He squeezed my hand. "I have no idea.
