Vanessa’s company, along with the good food and tequila, helped to ease the initial shock he’d felt upon hearing the DNA results. And by the time the two of them left Jose’s he was thinking clearly. At least as far the reality of being related to the Three River Hollisters. As for Vanessa, his mind was a jumbled mess, and what was worse, he feared she knew it.

He should never have told her that he was going to miss her. That had been stupid of him, and he figured the tequila he’d consumed had been partially to blame for the admission. But hell, why try to avoid the truth? He was going to miss her. Even if he never kissed her or held her in his arms again, he would still miss seeing her beautiful face and hearing her sweet voice and happy laugh. And the way she reached for his hand or arm... Oh yes, he was going to miss that, too.

“Jack, we don’t have to take a stargazing drive unless you want to. It’s still early. You could drive home to the ranch and talk with the Hollisters.”

He frowned as he gently cupped a hand beneath her elbow and helped her into the truck. “Will you quit with the Hollisters? This time is yours and ours. Let’s enjoy it. Okay?”

She smiled at him. “Okay. No more about the Hollisters. For the next few minutes you’re going to get a science lesson in astronomy.”

Chuckling, he made an exaggerated wipe of his forehead. “Whew! For a minute there, I was afraid you were going to say history.”

“Jack!”

Laughing, he closed the passenger door of the truck, then promptly joined her on his side of the cab.

“I was only teasing. You can give me a history lesson if you like. Dad always says a man is never too old to learn.”

He drove the truck out of the parking lot and turned westward onto a highway leading into the desert.

“Sounds like your father is a smart man,” she said with a smug smile. “But actually, you might like hearing about the gold rush that happened around here back in the 1800s. In fact, some gold is still being found.”

“I overheard Maureen talking about the Gold Rush Days celebration that occurs annually here in town. From what she said, the festival started because of the big mines that were discovered near Wickenburg.”

“Oh, shoot. So you already know about that. Well, I’ll bet you didn’t know that Chandler’s assistant Trey and his wife, Nicole, like to pan for nuggets. And they’ve found several small chunks of gold recently. They’re saving them up to buy a ranch.”

“That’s interesting. Did they find the gold close by?”

“Not exactly. But the location is in Yavapai County. I know it’s dark, but can you see that mountain to the north?” She pointed her finger toward a ridge of mountains visible through her side window.

“Barely. But I do.”

“Well, you go to the mountain beyond that one, and there’s a canyon there on land that belongs to a friend of Trey’s.
