Chapter Eighteen

I didn't remember getting off work or how I got in my bed, but the knock at my door brought my current situation to light, making me jump up and toss on a pair of slacks and a shirt. "One minute," I called, not completely cognitive. I didn't even know what time it was at this point.

I dashed to the door, slowly opening it, only to see Mia standing outside with a plate wrapped in foil. "I gather you're pretty hungry," she said with a knowing grin.

"Did I miss chow?" I asked, wiping my sleepy eyes with my hands.

"Yeah. Everyone was wondering where you were," she replied. "I told them that you must have dozed off after your shower."

"I showered?" I asked, sniffing myself before realizing that I was doing it in front of the other woman.

"Well, I'd hope so," Mia laughed. "You wouldn't have wanted to track any of that horse poop into your bed."

"No, I did," I confirmed. I smelled like soap, and I certainly didn't want her to think that I was a dirty person.

"Well, can I come in or would you rather me stick it out in the hall?" She asked.

"No, come in," I said, waving her inside. "It's a bit unorganized, but there's room for two." I quickly cleaned my laundry off the floor, putting the dirty clothes in a pile and the clean clothes back in my bag.

"It doesn't even look like you got settled yet," she commented, pulling a chair from the desk in the room. "Aren't you going to unpack?"

"I'm sure I will eventually," I replied. "But it takes me a while to get comfortable."

"Give it a couple of weeks," Mia replied. "It will feel just like home."

"I hope so," I said. "I haven't ever felt that way about a place that I lived, but I am ready to."

"You will," she said. "Give it time."

Mia handed me the plate of food and I sat down on my bed so I could eat it. I hadn't realized how hungry I was until I began to dig in. Everything tasted so good. I wasn't sure if that was because I was starving or if it was due to Marge's excellent cooking, but I ate every morsel on the plate.

"Hey, I had a question for you," Mia said after I had finished devouring my food.

"Yeah?" I asked, not sure what had caught her interest.

"Last night when we were going home, you kept talking about this Rena chick and how you screwed up and how she got devoured by sharks," Mia replied, looking very confused. "What did all that mean?"

I laughed a little due to her translation of what I had said when I was intoxicated and explained the situation with Rena.

Mia listened patiently, asking questions when she felt it necessary until she felt that she understood the entire story. "It sounds like you had feelings for Rena," she said. "Did the two of you ever date?"

"Briefly when we were younger," I replied. "But people change as they get older and so do their needs.
