Chapter Eighteen

AN OLD FACE

The moment Tim and Kaulia entered Lybertos’s bustling city, he was hit with various sights, sounds, and smells. He took in the colorful banners that stretched across buildings, the colorful Estian flag waving happily everywhere he looked, and the people--

There were so many. Cavestians, Planestians, Highestians, and even a few Forestians. Most races seemed to be sticking together. The Highestians especially kept to their own groups and looked down on those around them.

“The annual festival is supposed to be a day where we set aside our differences. It doesn’t always go that way.”

A group of Highestians caught sight of them, and Tim flinched as they visibly wrinkled their noses. He averted his eyes.

“I don’t see many Forestians,” he observed, watching as two Dunestians devoured sweet rolls and a group of Cavestians stared on with disgust. Tim’s mouth watered at the thought of sinking his teeth into some food.

Kaulia nodded stiffly. “We’re not welcome here.”

“But today is a day to set aside our differences.”

“It’s supposed to be. But the wounds of our recent history are still fresh.”

Tim remembered the memory that he wasn’t supposed to see of Kaulia’s father with his red eyes, slaughtering soldiers and Suprimis adamantly demanding they don’t let a Forestian into the streamer academy.

Before Tim could ask her to elaborate, she froze, tilting her head. Tim heard it, too – the rumbling voice of Suprimis.

They inched closer to the building they were next to and peered around the corner.

“Trust me, the sooner you graduate, the better,” Suprimis said. He stood in front of Sataris and Insidis, a hand on his streamestian at his side. It happily closed its eyes as he pet it. Another Highestian who looked like an older version of Sataris nodded grimly.

They were tucked away from the crowd, speaking in low voices.

The Highestian Tim didn’t know spoke. “You must return as soon as possible to Royalis, Sataris. You must act quickly to stake your claim to the throne before it’s too late.”

Sataris didn’t even bother lowering his voice. “I don’t want the throne, Father.” Tim watched his classmate’s hair whip around frantically. “I’ve told you this several times – I want to be a streamer.”

Sataris’s father scoffed, but Insidis stepped forward. “It’s been his dream since we were young. You would remember that if you cared to spend more time with us.”

“Enough of this.” Their father straightened, glaring first at Insidis, then at his son. “Your destiny is to be king. It’s time to step up and take your rightful place.”

“You do not understand the sacrifices made to ensure your ascension to the throne,” Suprimis added with a growl. “The choice is not up to you.”

Sataris’s hair continued waving wildly, but he didn’t respond. His fists tightened at his sides. Insidis’s eyes glittered with anger that she wasn’t afraid to direct at their father, but she, too, stayed silent.

“Now, then,” their father said, as if there hadn’t been such high tension between them. “You will do everything to ensure a quick graduation…”

Someone bumped into Tim, and he whipped around as a Highestian glared.
