Chapter Eight

We wrapped up Friday’s practice early, because we had to be at the mall by three o’clock to get our hair cut and styled.

Layla shoved her tambourine into her backpack. “I can’t believe I’m going to Shear Wonders.”

“Yeah, Shear Wonders,” Kyle said dreamily, having totally missed the cold sarcasm in Layla’s voice. “If any place can make me, uh, that is, us look any hotter than we already are, it’s Shear Wonders.”

Mac shrugged and said in an extra thick Irish brogue, “Ah, ‘tis a friend’s eye that’s a good mirror.”

“Uh ... yeah,” Kyle said.

Layla threw on her backpack. “I really don’t know if I’m going to let anyone touch my hair.”

“Hey, you have to.” Kyle said, wide-eyed. “It’s in the contract.”

I knew the fine print in the contract was a real sore point with Layla. I quickly changed the subject. “Hey, Layla. Rhett’s eating like a horse—or should I say ‘cat’?”

“Good job.” Layla punched my arm.

I playfully tapped her arm with my knuckles in return. “You should have no problem finding someone to adopt him.”

“Well,” Layla said, “I already have someone in mind.”

“Oh, yeah? Who?”

“I don’t want to say until it’s one hundred percent definite ....”

“As long as it’s a really good home,” I said. “He has to go to a good home. A really good home.”

“Don’t worry.” Layla smiled, kind of mysteriously, I thought. “He’ll go to a good home.”
