Cheating

Sheetal didn’t speak a word while driving Annie to the restaurant. Annie’s brain was bursting with questions.

“Can we eat in the car and not go to any place?”

“Yes, we can do that.” Sheetal stopped her car outside a restaurant and ordered food.

“Have you told your husband about your condition?” Annie asked.

Sheetal’s eyebrows lowered. She sighed on listening the word “condition.”

“The name of my clinic is Bowerbird. Do you know what it means?”

“No,” replied Annie.

“It is a bird which exhibits a unique characteristic. The most notable feature of bowerbirds is their extraordinarily complex courtship and mating behaviour, where males build a bower to attract mates.

“In addition to the bower construction and ornamentation, male birds perform involved courtship displays to attract females. Research suggests the male adjusts his performance based on success and female response.

Male-searching females commonly visit multiple bowers, often returning to preferred bowers several times, and watching males’ elaborate courtship displays and inspecting the quality of the bower.

Through this process the female reduces the set of potential mates. Many females end up selecting the same male, and many under-performing males are left without copulations. In addition, females mated with top-mating males tend to return to the male the next year and search less.

Now do you think bowerbirds are a disease?”

“You are making a wrong comparison. It’s what God has made them.”

“Exactly my point darling. It’s not a disease, so please don’t call it a condition. This is what it has been clearly explained to you by Ajoy.”

“Okay, enough of philosophy, madam. Tell me one thing. If he gets to know that you are lesbian, how do you think he will react?”

“I don’t know what will happen in the future, but I know what has happened in past.”

“What has happened in past?” Annie asked.

“When I was in Pondicherry, doing my MBBS, I was dating one of my batchmates. I was very serious about him and wanted to marry him, but he cheated on me. After that I didn’t dare get myself involved in a serious relationship, so I kept a very closed circle. Juhi was my roommate. She was very caring. I remember, in my third year when I got dengue, she stood by my side and took care of me like a mother. I developed a great affection for her. We finished our studies, and I remained in Pondicherry while she went to Delhi. She didn’t like Delhi at all, and she returned to Pondi within few months. I was very excited to have her back in Pondi. We started living together. We travelled together, partied together, and once, when we were drinking at home, I realized that I was attracted to her mentally and maybe physically. When she was high after drinking, she slept on my lap. I kept looking at her, and I kissed her too. She was too drunk to notice that.

It was a one-sided affair as she was already in a relationship. Her boyfriend was working in the UK, and they were planning to get married. I never expressed my feelings for her and kept my relationship as it was.
