Chapter Eleven
Dane made the orange garbage for his daughter but apparently he hadn’t done it right and she’d turned up her little nose. He’d cooked it perfectly! Or, as perfectly as possible for something that was not actually food. Why didn’t she like it?
Dani’s counselor had told him that grief could affect a child’s appetite. But he couldn’t help taking it personally.
The kid had flat-out refused to talk to him for two whole days and while he had to admit a grudging pride for her strength of will, it was irritating as hell to be on the wrong end of it.
He heard her down the hallway now, chattering away to Pam and an unfamiliar weight filled his chest. It was so damn frustrating, seeing the interaction between the two of them. Pam made it look so easy, yet his every attempt made him feel like a lumbering ox at a tea party. They were a closed circle, with him rejected on the outside, looking in.
A long-forgotten memory flashed into his head, of the first time he was taken away from his mother and put into foster care. The kids in the basement were in a circle on the floor, playing dice. They looked up at him briefly, then went back to their game, not bothering to say hi, not even moving so he could get past them to the room he was to occupy. When he tried to step over them, he got tripped.
They didn’t let up until he finally punched out the ringleader one day. Dane had to consciously unclench his jaw. He was not that kid anymore. He never would be again.
“Can we go outside?” he heard Dani say.
“You need to ask your father,” answered Pam. He could hear the smile in her voice.
A little thump sounded. Probably her foot.
Stubborn little munchkin, he thought with a smile.
An idea sparked.
“Hey, Pam,” he called. “Do you think Dani would like to play in the tide-pools?”
“That sounds like fun!” she responded.
Rustles and murmurs. The tap-tap-tapping of excited little feet.
A few minutes passed and then he heard footsteps. He looked up to see Pam, standing in front of him, a towel slung over her shoulder.
His thoughts sort of…stopped…then.
Pam’s sandals hung from her fingers, her feet bare. The naked feet were attached to naked legs that stretched up, up, up to a bit of sleek black fabric, banded with scarlet at the top, a color he couldn’t remember seeing on her before. A matching swath hid her breasts, but the curves were on full display, the soft skin, the dip of her belly button that would be the perfect spot for a mouthful of bubbly Prosecco… Or caramel sauce…
They weren’t thoughts so much as they were snapshots in an album he dearly wanted to open.
His brain told him that it wasn’t a bikini, it was a two-piece bathing suit that could have passed for a yoga outfit. He’d seen joggers wearing almost as little.
But his body seemed to have elbowed his brain right out the door.
